Hi Susie, I am related to Collins and Dowler from that area. My paternal grandmother was a Collins and my maternal grandmother was a Dowler. I would be very interested in seeing the photo's you have. I recently aquired some old photo's that belonged to my grandparents, some are of the Collins family, not all have been identified yet. I uploaded them to my picturetrail page at http://www.picturetrail.com the album name to visit is jeaniegabriel. I tried to e-mail you privately but the message came back telling me that you were not accepting e-mail from my address. Charles Franklin Collins and his wife Sarah Belle Sanford. When Sarah died he married a Hylah Cobb Harder. They had a large family and I have many nice pictures. Frank died in 1952 . He was 82 years old. Girls married names, Huston, Sheline, West, Dowler and Brown. Theresa Collins West is still alive and lives in Hillsboro . 90 + and also the wife of Harvey Collins , Faye Collins still lives in McArthur. She is 90 also. Also the brother of Frank was John Collins who lived in Clinton Twp. He was married to Martha Magoon from Vinton Co. and when she died very young, he married Jane Bowman Long. My GG grandfather Jesse Collins died in Wilkesville in 1882. I can find no trace of his wife Nancy Whetsel Collins after his death. They were the paretns of 10 children. Most of the Collins family lived in and out of Milton Twp. and Vinton Co. Probably where ever the work was at the time. Susie
Raynita, The Berlin Hotel you mention, where was it? I grew up in Jackson and don't remember a hotel other than the Cambrian and the Gibson. Thanks, Pam "Raynita G. Fenter" <rfenter[email protected]> wrote:I know just how you feel! When I was very young, I lived in Hamden very near the train depot. After doing this for so long, we became friends with the conductor and the cook on the train. It was the same ones every week. This was back in the days that they still had the wonderful Pullman cars that were so beautiful. We thought it had to be such a thrill to travel on such a beautiful train! The conductor would let us on the train to "take a peek" inside. We loved it! We even got to the point of exchanging Christmas gifts with the conductor and cook each year. My family moved out to our "farm" when I was in the sixth grade and the "people trains" stopped soon after that. I grew up and left Vinton County and several years after that, a relative of mine that lived in Hamden sent me a brick from the Hamden depot because it was being torn down. It was so sad thinking of the depot of my childhood years being gone and the first time I went home to Vinton county, I had to go there to see it. All that was left was the brick sidewalk that had been in front of the depot. I have moved many, many times since then and that silly brick always goes with me!!! Dear List Members, A list member sent me a plat map from 1997 and I have made some comparisons. Thank you also for sending me info on how to "read" the map and where to get documentation on the land. I am relatively new to genealogy research. I guess I need to plan a trip to Ohio! Please advise me on my next step in this research. I could not come until summer of 2003, so is there places (cheep) to stay and besides the Vinton County Courthouse, where else should I plan to research? My goal would be to find the names of Abraham and Nancy (MCKEE) BRYSON parents, siblings, exact birthplace, etc. But I would be happy just to see where they lived and take pictures of where they are buried! Abraham had only two sons that had children. Winfield Scott BRYSON is my linage. My grandfather William Randolph BRYSON Jr. was the last male born from that linage. I would like to find the other BRYSON family... (my hopes are that we did not fizzle out.) Yes, this list has wonderful members and thank you for your response to my inquiry. Thank you even more for the ongoing personal stories and articles of times and places that bring such vivid images for us that are distant. This is what true history is about! Again THANK YOU! Sincerely, Diana Bryson-Brooks
I too , went ot Oreton , and got a couple of bricks from there depot. The reason I did, this, it was the last time, my mother saw her mother, she was very young, and they had to take her Mother to Cols. hospital, where she died of cancer. My mother is now 85, a shut in, for several years, so I went down and brought her back a brick, which meant alot to her. , I kept the other to tell my granchildren about, and show them pictures I took of the tunnel, and where this little town use to be. Mother has so many interesting stories to tell, and these things help keep her going.
This list is really terrific.. You all go above and beyond ! I wanted to tell Diana my experience looking at all the old land records. They people in the Vinton Co. courthouse were great to begin with.. and you could even look for records by last name etc. The hugh old books that held the records were put right on a copier and you had your copy. Forgot the fee, but not much. If you have the time you can actually trace that piece of property thru the years with all the different owners. It is HARD work tho. I am usually exhausted after a short time because those books are heavy and hugh.. You are on your own to trace and get what you need. I was able to prove a marriage with a land record. If it is sold after a death then the various heirs have to sigh off etc. so you can prove a child or get their married names. Other than that it is just nice to have the original paperwork of your ancestor. Susie

Note that some of the sections are preceded by "Fr.". This means Fractional Section and it was just related to the way the land was originally surveyed. The 109 acres is actually located in Fr. 35, or what would normally be Section 28. In Ohio the County Recorder maintains land records and they have all deed descriptions since the beginning of the county. You can contact the recorders at the county courthouse in the county seat of each county. Even if the office might be located in another building, you should still be able to reach them. Nothing I may say necessarily applies to Summit County (although it may). It is the only county in Ohio that has a Charter form of government, instead of the commissioner form. I am not sure how you want a comparison with current Vinton County. If you mean land owners, that probably has little significance for you. If you mean roads, the county and township roads generally follow the old roads that were in existence in 1875. In many cases, the sharp turns that tended to exist along property lines have been smoothed out for automobile traffic. State highways tend to follow more straight lines also and depend less on existing roads when the highway was constructed or upgraded for automobiles. As far as the properties you mentioned, the 40 acre plot is now owned by the State of Ohio as part of the Zaleski State Forest. The 109 and 100 acre plots are located along State Route 278. That is the road that you can see going through the property on the 1875 map. ======================================== Charles R. I measured it on some mapping software that I have and I got 11.2 miles, but that is going the shortest way by modern highways (Rt 160, Rt 324, Rt 93). In 1889, the roads would not have been as straight since with modern highway construction they straighten the road and bypass small burgs in order to go more directly between major towns or villages. ======================================== Charles R. Dear List I need some advise. After reviewing the Madison Township map on the RootsWeb/Vinton County Ohio Geneology site, I became really, really curious... There are 2 blocks with numbers 109 & 100 - A. Bryson in section 29 and 40 with A. Bryson Jr. in section 23. (I am assuming this is for the amount of acres, please correct me if I am wrong.) WHO would have the legal documents/information on this land ownership in 1875? The only document regarding Abraham Bryson from BLM states that Abraham Bryson bought 81 acres - Section 5, Township 1, Range 3, in Guernsey County Ohio. I would also enjoy a comparison of current Vinton County to this old map. Sincerely, Diana Bryson-Brooks
I have a copy of a letter from 1889 from a Radcliff who lived in Radcliff apologizing to a relative for not sending family photos. He hadn't yet gone the 15 miles to Mc Arthur to get the pictures "made." Is that mileage correct? Gary Radcliffe West Covina, CA

These small 'towns' were mainly cluster homes around old mine sites. As the need for Iron ore was replaced by more modern Great Lakes shipping, the old ore towns were no longer needed. Automobiles killed most of these place too, you no longer needed post offices and you can trace the decline by when some of the post offices closed or were combined. Many names remain but the exact locations are harder to fine. Wilkesville once had a college in the early days. Nearby were Clarion, Hawk, Oreton with Minerton farther south and a few others such as Summit station very near Dundas. The Oreton tunnel can be seen along the road. Most of these towns were near a railroad station and McArthur was one of the last places to get a train line. I can recall when they tore down Oreton and McArthur train stations in the 1960s, only the concrete bases remain. North of McArthur where the Ford garage is, was a series of old mine shanties where the workers live during the week, a source told me that when there wasn't any work there, the men would go to Senecaville to work. A few decades later, the country stores disappeared, the only remains of Ratcliffsburg and it's country store is a road sign. I bought penny candy from Russell Pickney 'Pink' Perry and his wife Flora, the store and house have fallen down in the last 35 years. Pink Perry was blind but tended to his hogs by following ropes out to the barn. He pumped gas by counting the 'dings' the gravity pumps made so he could charge the correct amount. The old store can still be seen along route 50 East about 2 miles from McArthur.
<PRE> You should contact them before making a visit. They closed the society 'Alice's house' for the winter.
I THINK Alice's house (Genealogy ) is closed for the winter starting Dec. 8th. If you contact them someone will be there to open it for you by appointment. Susie
The road is called Clarion Rd. and it starts on St.Rt.124. It is about a half mile from the main road. It used to have a railroad stop and many people used to live there. The building fell into disuse and fell down some time ago. If you look on the right you can see the train stop, where it used to stop for water. The road ends at Hawkes.
