Speaking of ancestry.com...what's the deal with not being able to view 1930 census images from ohio. I get an error everytime. Does anyone else have this problem?

It is imperative to review your credit card statements as soon as they arrive. Your credit card company isn't as likely to help you resolve a disputed charge if you wait more than 30 days to dispute it. Amy
You must read the fine print. It tells you that you must inform them in writing that you want to discontinue service. You should give them at least thirty days notice minimum or you will be charged. Many people are being taken to the cleaners by them with this little tactic. I have had ancestry.com for years now (both subscriptions), and they always call before renewing my membership. I have had "no" trouble with them and find the site most helpful to me, and for those I can help. I do not understand what could have happened with your misfortune, but you should contact them, not just your credit card company. I am sure they will be glad to straighten it out for you. BTW - All states are now indexed and searchable by name, for the 1930 census. I have had Ancestry for three years and I was concerned that they automatically renewed my membership with no mention via email or phone. I canceled the membership for about six months before returning which was fortuitus since I didn't do much genealogy during that period. Don
I belong to Ancestry now and have for years. They have NEVER renewed anything without asking me first. I, too have two different subscriptions and they are renewed at different times and they call each time. I think there service is great and very useful. I have found many, many things that have helped in my research. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 20, 2002 11:01 AM Subject: [OHVINTON-L] Ancestry.com subscription > I have belonged to ancestry. >From the McArthur Democrat-Enquirer, Oct. 8, 1919 Following is a list of candidates for an election that was held on November 4, 1919. Unfortunately the margin on the left side of the photocopy page was cut short, and I am unable to figure out some names for the first four townships. The article notes that this was a non-partison election, so party affiliations are not given. Write-ins were permitted where no candidates were listed. Although part of the article is cut-off, it appears to say that women could only vote for members of the School Board, and you will note only one woman candidate (for a school board seat). Back in MAY of this year - 2002 - Ancestry charged my credit card with another year of service [[ without my approval ]]. I did NOT request it . This is not a minor charge with the census cost also . I called the card company and requested it be on disput since I did NOT reorder the service . It has not been that beneficial for me to use their service . Update --> the charge still has NOT been taken off my charge . So just to let you newbies know - if they have youre credit card number they will keep charging you each year and will NOT refund if you dispute it ! Let the buyer beware when they have youre credit card number ........... I closed mine so they cant do it again --- sheri
In going over some old papers it appears that the subject named families were all in Chatham County, NC and may have gone together to Vinton County, Ohio. Some later lived in Jackson. The move would have taken place 1803-04 or 1807-08. There were Lackeys and McAlexanders in Patrick Co., VA also. I think I may be confusing the families. Can anyone verify this? Gary Radcliffe
>From the McArthur Democrat-Enquirer, September 17, 1919 "KNOX NO. 1 (Delayed) Last Friday the writer had the pleasant opportunity to visit the school at Gum Tree, and was amazaingly surprised to find the school room in the nice condition that it was, therefore we feel that we should compliment such. Upon visiting this school you will find: the windows beautifully decorated with shades and curtains, a water fountain which is very essential to good health in the rural school by the sanitary manner in which the water is supplied to the purpils, a dictionary which is up to date and well fitted to the work used in the rural schools, a patented pencil sharpener which does away with the dirty fingers which caused many finger prints to be left upon the books which was sure to be the case with the old manner of using the knife, a thermometer to regulate the heat of the room in the winter so as to keep it at an even temperature which is essential to good health and to the welfare of the pupils in studying, a small library with a nice collection of books which a! re educational as well as interesting to read by the pupils who have different tastes for reading matter. On the sides of the blackboard there is a map one of the world and one of the U. S. these are used to advantage in the teaching of geography. In the center of the wall in the front of the room is a service flag containing five stars, representing the five boys that were in service from this district viz: Earl TEWKSBURY, David CHESSER, Vernon CANNY, James ELLIS, Virgil CANNY. We are glad to state that all the fixtures of the room are in first class condition. We feel that the teacher of the school for the past year and the present (Lenora SLEETH) is worthy of much credit and praise for bringing this school up to the present condition. While the visit was paid during the first week of school and the attendance was small, yet it was pleasing to note what interest the pupils were taking and we are sure with the efficient teacher that we have been able to secure that this yea! r of school will be a success. Let's all boost the school and shout hurrah for Gum Tree. It is with regret that we have to call the attention of the people of this community concerning the condition of the cemetery at Bethel. It seems as tho the people have lost all interest in the up keep of it. The cemetery contains several nice monuments, but they can hardly be seen for the growth of vegtable matter that covers the ground. It looks as tho much respect should be shown to the ones that have traveled life's journey and have passed on, never to return. Several of the soldiers of the civil war are lying in "peaceful slumbers: under the sod and the dew, awaiting the judgment day;" then shall we the people of this vicinty allow the graves to become covered with the growth of the summer. Surely the people will honor the graves of the heroic dead for the deeds that they have done. As we travel over the country we seldom ever see another one in this condition and why should we not have a clean cemetery. Its the duty of the people of this vicinity to keep up the cemeter! y. We hope that people will be brought to a consideration by some member of the church and that they will make arrangements to donate at least one half a day and with the aid of the people of this district will turn out for the respect of the dead that sleep the sleep that knows no breaking."

Dear Vinton Group, This is part of my line of GRAVES. I did not do this research. Is this line being researched by anyone on this list? Amos Brewer was born 1768 , in North Carolina; the son of John Brewer. His mother's name is unknown. Amos married Jane GRAVES in August of 1789 and there were eleven children born of this marriage: a son, believed to be William; John; Ruth; a daughter whose name is unknown; Alexander; Mary; Margaret; Isaac; Nathan; Jane; and possibly a daughter by the name of Sarah. There is a notation from the minutes of the Quaker Cane Creek monthly meetings stating: "Minutes of 5 Sep. 1789. Jane (formerly GRAVES) disowned, married out of unity in 8th month." Amos and Jane settled in Ross County, Ohio in 1805. In 1810 they moved to Athens County, Ohio near the present site of Zaleski, Ohio. A deed in Book 5, page 393 at Athens County Court House, Ohio dated December 31, 1824 states that Amos Brewer purchased from Conner and Hannah GRAVES Dowd a parcel of land in Township 10, section 35, range 16 for fifty dollars. Hannah was Jane's sister and married a Conner Dowd who was a Revolutionary War soldier. Conner served under General Nathaniel Greene and General Franc is Marion. He fought at the Battle of Cowpens and other engagements and saw the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. His service under General Marion was filled with adventure and dating raids. Conner was 20 years older than Hannah. They were married in North Carolina in 1796 and were the parents of seven sons and three daughters.
