You can try writing to the Union County and Madison County Historical Society and ask them to do a name search. If they have anything, they will copy and mail to you. A donation to the historical society is always appreciated. I have been able to receive old court records, and have located many relatives. They also have very good websites. Peggy
Hi, Could someone please do a lookup for me as I cannot find these people anywhere in Ohio (or even their birth areas of MA, or Canada) but, our family has proof that they did in fact live in Ohio in the 1920s to maybe the 1940s? They lived in the areas of Akron and Plain City. The names are Howard E(merson) Bishop, Margaret Jane (Hayman) Bishop and Harold Lee Bishop. Thanks for any help someone could give me. Jacquie

Dear Listers, I'm researching my maternal great-grandparents, Howard Emerson BISHOP and Margaret Jane HAYMAN; and their son (my grandfather) -- Harold Lee BISHOP. Sometime between 1902 and 1921 they moved to Ohio in the Summit County area (maybe around the areas of Akron, Sawyerwood and Barberton) from the eastern seaboard areas of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. They had at least 2 children with them when they arrived in Ohio. According to information gathered from 2 of their children's birth certificates:::::::: Howard E Bishop was born 1872 in either Newfoundland or New Brunswick, Canada. Margaret Jane Hayman was born 1871 in Nova Scotia. Sometime between 1872 to 1896, Howard was a mariner. Then, after 1896 he became a teamster. Did he work the (USA) Great Lakes Harbor area? While living in Rhode Island and traveling back and forth to Massachusetts they had 3 children: Georgie (Georgina) Minnie born 1896 in Boston/Dorchester, MA ; Harold Lee born 1900 in Reading, MA (a delayed birth certificate was filed for Harold Lee in Providence, Rhode Island) ; and Marguerite L. born 1901 in Providence, Rhode Island (and may have died in infancy). Sometime during 1918 - 1922 their son, Harold Lee Bishop left the Summit County area and traveled south to Union County, Ohio where he met Thelma Gladys INSKEEP. Harold Lee and Thelma Gladys married in 1922 in Marysville, Ohio. According to family letters and legal documents, Harold Lee was a mechanic or garageman from around 1922 to late 1925. He may have worked in the Plain City area. It was said of Harold Lee that, "he was a very good mechanic, one of the best around". It was also said that Harold Lee had a passion for the seas. Then, in January 1926 something happened.......Harold Lee Bishop left for work one day as usual with a packed lunch -- and kissed his wife........sadly, he never made it back home. They had 3 children....2 now deceased and 1 still living. Also, according to an old telegram that was recently found, Harold Lee was in Florida in December 1923 with his mother, Margaret Jane Hayman-Bishop, where she was to have died. (so far there's no proof of her death - but we have written to Florida for proof). Howard and Margaret's daughter, Georgie (Georgina) Minnie Bishop married a -------------Williams in Summit County. Georgina M. Bishop-Williams died in 1977 in Summit County. If any of this connects, please write me. Thanks in advance for any help anyone might be able to give. Regards, Jacquie Baral

This message appeared on a Virginia list to which I subscribe. Does anyone have details on this legislation? I can understand removing social security numbers from such documents, but removing the maiden names of mothers does not seem to serve a valid purpose and would substantially reduce the usefulness of the information to genealogists. I would like more detailed information before writing my representative. Has anyone seen the text of this bill? Thanks!!!!! -----Original Message----- From: TowpathGal@aol.com <TowpathGal@aol.com> To: VALOUDOU-L@rootsweb.com <VALOUDOU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, April 18, 2000 9:17 AM Subject: [VALOUDOU-L] Research threatened by Ohio Legislature >In a message dated 4/18/00 2:12:05 AM Pacific Daylight Time, >zona.himmelsbach@juno.com writes: > ><< Hello list members searching Ohio records for marriage information: > This comes from the April 2000 Mahoning County Chapter of the OGS > newsletter: "Introduced into the Ohio House of Rep. is a bill to amend > the Ohio Revised code that should have genealogists up in arms. This is the first I have heard of this legislation. I suspect the reason is that financial institutions use the mother's maiden name to verify identity. Maybe there are date limitations. There is probably no need to protect the mother's identity if all her children are deceased. But how do you determine this? Only marriage records are mentioned, but what about birth and death records, which are even more likely to contain the mother's maiden name. Is someone going to sponsor a bill to remove information from these as well? I have been able to place a number of women with their parents using the mother's maiden name appearing on death records.
