    1. [OHUNION-L] State & County Local Census Count
    2. Jacqueline Baral
    3. Hi, Can someone please tell me if the state of Ohio and counties of Union and Summit had off-year censuses (as opposed to the US Federal Census every 10 years? I have data from the 1920 US Census but was wondering if the state & counties did census counts every 5 years. Thank you, Jacquie (California)

    3. Dear Listers: I've had a great response from people looking for ancestors who may have been patients in these institutions. Since I posted my offer for look-ups, I've decided it would be easier to scan the pages and post them to the web for everyone to utilize. The information is too important and needs to be shared. I've done the best I can with "shrinking" the pages to a reasonable size that can still be read online and hopefully, can still be printed out for keeping. Also, please be my guest and "save" copies for your keeping in your own files. Here's where you can find the information, http://home.earthlink.net/~jacquiebaral/index.html - Also, I have one page of the April 20, 1910 US Census for the patients of the Columbus State Hospital, Franklin County, Ohio. The page starts with only one name for "P", and lists alphabetical to one name with "W". The handwriting is not the best but most are still legible. I hope you find this information helpful. Kind regards, Jacquie (California) "Still A Buckeye At Heart!"

The BRYAN surname was all over that state, but if memory serves me right, it was around the Yadkin River section of N.C. where Daniel Boone lived before he went to Kentucky. I think Daniel Boone's wife, Becky, was a BRYAN before she married. I found this out while researching the BRYAN surname for my cousin, who is now deceased. I would check Kentucky for your BRYAN family first, and if you can't find anything there, then search N.C. There has been a lot written about the BRYAN family because of the Daniel Boone connection. I saw many books in the Greenville, N. C. Library on them. Good luck in your search. This is the first time I've ever contributed to this list, altho I've been reading all the posts for a couple months now. My surnames are MITCHELL, MCCULLOUGH, CARY, and LEONARD. Some of my family lived in Madison County before moving into Union. They were in this area before Madison and Union even became counties. Thanks for the chance to post my surnames. 1. [OHUNION-L] Union County Surnames
    2. Hi list, My family moved to Union County before 1840 and I have been trying to find where they were before that. The main surname I am searching is BRYAN. The family originally moved to Darby Twp, but later moved to Allen Twp after my GGGrandfather, JAMES BRYAN, died. Collateral lines from Union County are: WOODARD, FILLEY, MAPES, DOOLITTLE, PAGE, CONKLIN, BROWN, McFARLAND, PATRICK, COOPER, HUFFMAN, and ORGAN I'd love to talk with anyone who is also searching one or more of these names. Thanks in advance! Maelle Bryan Heath MHeath914@aol.com

    3. Shirley - If Oak Grove Cemetery is a Delaware city cemetery very probably the City of Delaware maintained Interment Records of every burial. Commonly these interment records would include date of death, names of both parents of the deceased, place and date of birth, place and date of death, date of interment, location of grave by lot and section number, and in many cases the cause of death and name of the attending physician. If it is a city cemetery, and if the city maintained interment records (ind I'll bet they did), those records very likely still exist in some dusty vault in the basement of Delaware City Hall, or possibly even at the cemetery itself. Good luck! Bill Lingrell

    3. A guide to Union Co. probate records says that the estate of John Eastman, died 1828, was recorded in the Common Pleas Journal on page 66. However, when I wrote to the Co. probate court for a copy, they said they could find no record of it. They had no trouble finding the other probate record I asked for, and I had used information from the same Co. probate guide for both of them. Has anyone else had problems like this- records not being where they are supposed to be? Or should I assume that they missed it somehow, and that I will have to go to the office in person if and when I ever get to Union Co? Steve Frevert

    3. Shirley, have you tried look at Civil War records? If you can find him in a particular unit or maybe in records regarding prisoners at Andersonville, you may be able to get his military records from the National Archives which just may tell you his parents' names. 2. SHIRLEY NEWBOLD
    3. Hello, I've just joined the list; Union Co. is just about the only place I have not researched in Ohio so far. I have a NATHAN(IEL) HINES who had a farm in Magnetic Springs. He died in 1907 and was buried in Oak Grove, Delaware City, with other family members. Here's the problem, although I have an obituary kindly sent by the Delaware County Historical Society, I cannot find his death certificate. Have called Probate in Union, Huron and Erie (where he had family), Franklin Co and queried the Historical Society on Velma Ave. in Columbus. All to no avail. The clerk in Union County Probate just told me yesterday that it may have not been recorded at all due to the fact that it was not required until 1909. But, there is some dispute among researchers as to his parentage and we need to verify who they were.(they are not mentioned in obituary) Hence this desparate search. My question: does anyone researching in Union County know of any other place where his death might be noted? My idea is that it was likely recorded but perhaps wrong spelling, wrong date, some mistake made that makes it hard to find. I would be very grateful for any ideas on further efforts I could make. By the way, he was in the Civil War and was a prisoner for a time at Andersonville. Sincerely, Shirley Newbold newbolds@home.com Grosse Pointe, MI

    3. Hi Shirley, I believe deaths were recorded in ledgers at Probate Court beginning about 1869. There was very little information included, however.- just the name, date and city or township of death (sometimes the date and place of birth was recorded). Frequently, the death was not recorded at all. It wasn't untill death certificates were required that parent's names were recorded. During the transition period (1905-1910), it seems that a number of deaths were "lost". Paul Huffman
