    3. About 10 days ago I got an email that was important news on history in Union County from jmchipka@firstenergycorp.com. I replied the next day and it came back as not a valid address and I took it directly from the source, so it was not a typo on my part. Does anybody out there know of jmchipka? Jim in KC. Thank you, Jeannet >> You did not say if you needed any assistance with this family. I verified the marriage of Alfred Stout to Margaret Johnston on 20 Oct 1853; and to Phebe A Hess on 19 Nov 1874. He only shows married twice in union co OH from 1820 to 1900. According to the cemetery books, neither Alfred nor either wife is buried in any union co OH cemetery. If you do not know where they went after union co OH, I may be able to help with census info. The actual census pages for union co are on line at ancestry.com now. Many other OH counties are listed also, but not all of them. A subscription is required to see them. Hope this helps. 3. I wrote a letter to the Union County Historical Society last winter after I called and their machine said they were closed for the winter. I've never had a reply. Can someone give me some direction? My great uncle (5x) was Thomas S. Loveless who was the principle owner of the woolen mills in Marysville (with other office around the county) from about 1876 to 1896. I am putting together a newsletter devoted to my family in commerce. All of them seemed to get into retail business. All I need is an old (or new) photo of a mill in Marysville around that time. After Thomas died someone else took over the mill. It was supposedly such a large employer that I guessed someone would have a picture of it. I appreciate your time and interest.

You can see the extent of its coverage on the newspaper bibliography page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohunion/newb.html The Ohio Historical Society Library/Archives has the corresponding microfilm covering 1862. The Marysville Public Library most likely has these same issues on microfilm as well in its collection of early newspapers although I have not verified that. Your reference to the small house is the Union County Historical Society. The Ohio Historical Society Library/Archives does loan its newspaper microfilms; see their interlibrary loan web page at: http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/ill.html Otherwise, you might want to contact the Union County Genealogical Society to have someone check issues in their collection at the Marysville Public Library for some mention of your ancestor's death; see their web page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohuniogs/index.htm I hope that helps. 3. WOW! I expected a lot of response to my earlier message, but I had no idea how great the response would be. :o)) I forgot to mention that the book is not indexed so I will have to spend quite a bit of time on each request. I have no problem with that, but I am asking all of you who have requested lookups to be patient. Since I recognize some of the e-mail addresses that have come in I know that some of you are aware that I am very involved in internet genealogy. I am County Coordinator for four GenWeb counties, a USGenWeb Special Project webmaster, etc. I'm telling you this only so that you will understand the time constraints. I WILL look for your ancestor(s). I'll respond to each one in the order that they come in. To make things easier for me I would appreciate it if you could include the time period (remember--nothing after 1901) and location(s) with each name. And, please, no more than three names at a time. ;o) Happy hunting! Leona

    3. Hi, everyone! I would like to volunteer to do look-ups in Elliot Howard Gilkey's, THE OHIO HUNDRED YEAR BOOK, 1803-1902, A HAND-BOOK OF THE PUBLIC MEN AND PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS OF OHIO FROM THE FORMATION OF THE NORTH-WEST TERRITORY (1787) TO JULY 1, 1901 (Columbus 1901). This book is crammed full of illustrations of people and places, not to mention that it's a who's-who of the important (and not so important) men of early Ohio. Some of the people in the book are only mentioned with many others on a list. For instance, for the Boys' Industrial Home there is a brief description of the "home" with a photo of the then superintendent. At the end of the description is a list of the Board of Trustees with the person's name, term of service and the county of residence. It would probably be a good idea to send your requests for lookups to me privately at GenealogyBug@Gustafson.net Happy hunting! Leona

F.W.C. Wiechers. the interment was made at the cemetery in the Settlement. <reply> this may have been the bonner settlement in Leesburg twp??? Or maybe the German settlement in Darby twp. <snip> I have both their death certificates. Each certificate shows the name "Smith" not "Schmidt". Last fall I went to the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery and found their markers. <reply> Schmidt is a common name in Germany. I have some Schmidt ancestors from Gommersheim and Freisbach Germany. They are located about 14 miles east of Kaiserslautern. But for the most part when they came to the US the name became Smith. If they lived in an area where other German immigrants lived, then they would have retained the name Schmidt, as they would have spoken German and attended, most likely, a Lutheran church or a German Reformed church. So if you find this name interchanged, you are probably still on the right track in your research -- IF the names and dates match the man, the wife, and the kids. I will try to look up some Schmidt info and, if I find more than what others have sent you, I will send you an e-mail. I know twenty some years ago I ordered a few death certificates from the 1800's direct from the Ohio counties. <snip> The answer may be "yes" or "no" depending on the particular county in question. Researchers are familiar with the Ohio Historical Society's collection of state death certificates from late 1908 through the mid-1940s, but should be aware that county and other local governments do sometimes transfer noncurrent records to the historical society or other similar agencies. It is possible that the death records for the county in question covering the 1867-1908 period have been transferred in that manner. Checking with the Ohio Historical Society reference staff should help. Another possibility that is sometimes more effective is to obtain the microfilm copy of the county death records through one of the LDS family history centers, if you live near one.
