It is not a matter of misspellings -- the use of these variants was very common and can often be seen to change each decade within the same family. My McCall/McCally/etc. line is from Beaver, Hookstown PA -- spelling seems to be irrelevant. I even suspect two brothers of using different variants to distinguish their two families, in which many of the children shared the same first names with their cousins. You have probably also seen the entry for John McCall in the History of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, Ohio, listing John McCall as "Overseer of the Poor." (Google Books).
