My family includes the following: John born in Wales; married to Frances born in 1811 in Wales. Children of John and Frances Matthews that I know of are as follows: Benjamin born in 1850 in Wales; Margaret A born in 1855 in Wales, immigrated to the US in 1866, married Thomas R Roberts in 1872, had 11 children, died in 1917; and Evan born in 1859 in Wales. If you should come across any of my family, I'd appreciate knowing. I live in Hermitage, PA which is just next to Trumbull & Mahoning Counties in OH and have some excellent sources, but I didn't come across your specific Matthews people. Marty Smith >> Hello Marty, I believe there were two John Matthews living in Trumbull Co., OH about the same time, at any rate I've seen what I believe to be two different lines. . . The one I'm researching is . . . John Matthews/Mathews b. abt. 1818 Wales - d. Aft. 1880 Trumbull Co. m. @1844 Wales to Hannah Jones (b. abt. 1823 Wales - d. aft. 1880 Trumbull Co.) Is on the 1870-1880 census living in Hubbard, Trumbull Co. Children from census, death certs, mortality index and Benjamin's pension ap: 1. Benjamin Matthews - b. 23 Feb 1845 Tradager, Wales m. 11 Jan 1868 Trumbull Co. to Marion Evans (Civil War vet) 2. John Mathews - b. 1848 N. Wales - d. 13 Aug 1871 Hubbard, Trumbull Co. - killed in coal bank. 3. Mary J. Matthews - b. abt 1853 PA m. abt. 1872 Trumbull Co. to Richard Williams (on 1880 cen next to parents) 4. James Matthews - b. abt 1856 Ohio 5. Margaret Matthews - b. abt.1859 b. Ohio 6. Anna Matthews - b. abt. 1862 Ohio - m. abt 1879 Hubbard to James Beilton 7. William Penn Matthews - b. 8 Sept 1867 Trumbull Co., OH - d. 8 Nov 1943 Cuyahoga Co., OH m. Ellen Rouan abt 1890 in Mahoning Co. (my line) 8. Thomas Matthews - b. abt 1870 Trumbull Co., OH I have looked at index of immigration and naturalization, suspect Philidelphia abt. 1850-1852 a likely entry time and spot and there are several John Mathews/Matthews to choose from. The overwhelming number of John Matthews on the 1860 census in PA scares me off. The other TO: e-mail is Sue Brown who is desc from Benjamin and has supplied some of the dates and information on this family. (Hi Sue :-) It is interesting the naming similarities in the two lines. Thanks for the response. (Smith line is from John Smith & wife Mary who settled Columbiana, OH abt. 1809 - their son Henry Smith m. Leah Wollam 1820 and moved 1850 to Ashland, OH) Pamela Geisler Smith, Gresham, OR
