She was born 2 Dec 1878 in ReedsburgOH, a dau of Solomon & Rosanna Gill Mellinger. On 22 Jan 1901, she married Walter Bates & they have resided in Cortland with their family for the last 20 years, having come here from Girard. She was a member of Girard Baptist Church. MrsBates is survived by her husband & 3 children: MrsEdith Riebe-CoolidgeAZ; Neil & Frank Bates-both Cortland; 2 grandchildren; 3 sis: MrsMinnie Hull-CherryValley; MrsJennie Commers-Paulding; MrsEdna Hurst-Greenville; 3 bros: William-GrandRapidsOH; Ira-Dorset & Herbet-LargoFL. Service will be Sun afternoon at Love Funeral Home-Cortland in charge of RevWalter Hoover & RevJoseph Bartenuk. Burial will be in Kinsman Cem. OBIT: OH-Warren Tribune 07 Apr 1958 WALTER LEE BATES: Cortland's first street commissioner; 79, died Sat afternoon in the home of his son-Neil Bates-Cortland. Active in many community improvement projects in & around Cortland for many years, MrBates served as street commissioner from 1941-44. Until his retirement in Jan of this year he worked as a carpenter. He was born 24 Jun 1878 in Crawford County PA, a son of Sylvester & Anna Brockway Bates. In 1901 MrBates married the former Lulu Mellinger who preceded him in death in 1950. He was a member of Cortland Christian Church. Surviving are 3 children: MrsEdith Riebe-Cortland; Neil & Frank-both Cortland; 4 grandchildren & 2 gr grandchildren. Service will be held Tues afternoon at Love Funeral Home. Burial will be in Kinsman Cem.
