Author: val714 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.trumbull/5120.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You're right, I hadn't thought of looking for another spelling. I have these kinds of spelling variations in other branches of my family. Thanks for reminding me. You mention cousins often having the same names. I noticed this in another, related family in that same area. They were also Scots-Irish. Was this a common practice among them? It was kind of throwing me and making me doubt what I was finding. And yes, I think this "overseer of the poor" could have been the father of John b:1815. I'm trying to obtain war records, marriage records, etc. and see if I can get more clues. Maybe I should post on the Mercer County PA board, too. That's where the younger John lived out his life. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Nancy_Fredenberg Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.trumbull/5120.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear val, Remember to also consider name variants for your McCall line, such as McCally, McColl, McColly or even McCalley. It is not a matter of misspellings -- the use of these variants was very common and can often be seen to change each decade within the same family. My McCall/McCally/etc. line is from Beaver, Hookstown PA -- spelling seems to be irrelevant. I even suspect two brothers of using different variants to distinguish their two families, in which many of the children shared the same first names with their cousins. You have probably also seen the entry for John McCall in the History of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, Ohio, listing John McCall as "Overseer of the Poor." (Google Books). Author: mclean811 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.trumbull/5121/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John Anderson married Eleanor Crawford Oct 1818 in Liberty. Does anyone know who his parents were, or if he is listed in a census? I am looking for a John Anderson, son of Stephen Anderson and brother to Nancy Anderson. He is mentioned as a co-executor in a will in 1841 and perhaps an 1848 will. The only John Anderson I can't account for is the one married to Eleanor Crawford and as such, I am hoping he is the right one. All the John Anderson's I have noted came to Trumbull after 1825. Also, the John Anderson listed in the 1830 Howland census is married to Matilda Bell. Any help would be appreciated. I am still unable to unravel the 5 James Anderson families and to whom my Anderson's belong. I believe my family is from James Anderson of Liberty but other people say Howland. Author: val714 Surnames: McCall Newkirk Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.trumbull/5120/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm trying to find information, and would especially like to find the parents of John McCall who I believe was born in Coitsville, OH. He was born in 1815 and died in 1888 in West Middlesex, where he lived in adulthood. He married Mary Ann Newkirk b:1816, daughter of John F. Newkirk b:1794 and they resided in West Middlesex, PA. I have found a tax record for a John McCall who owned land in Coitsville in 1804. I also found a record of a John McCall who was elected in an April 1807 election for Coitsville Township as an "Overseer of the Poor." I believe this could be his father. Coitsville is only a few miles from New Middlesex, PA and I keep finding other family members moving back and forth between the two towns. Does anyone know of this family or these people? Thanks.
