A letter has been discovered in which an ancestor claims that his father died at Churchill, and was buried at the Churchill Cemetery in Vienna. I have looked on my maps and found that both Churchill and Vienna are in Trumbull Co, OH, but are about 6 miles apart. Is there a Churchill Cemetery in Vienna, or is the Churchill Cemetery in Churchill itself? Can anyone help me out on this? Steve Dalton daltons@midwest.net

At some time after 1835, Richard Shaw left Vermont and moved to Trumbull Co. where he died in 1847 at age 95. His probate was assigned to a Hiram Shaw. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Hello list I am trying to piece together my BOYD history & they have been my biggest puzzle so far. I need to find the whereabouts of Robert & Sarah ( MILLER) BOYD (my gggrandparents) in 1870. They are listed in the 1860 census-Bazetta township. They are apparently not found in Bazetta by 1870 census.(per a previous lookup). I have since found a cemetary listing in Howland township that appears to be the right family though some of the dates are not a match. (I have sent for death certificates of some of the males buried at this site to try to determine if they are in fact brothers of my Samuel. My ggrandfather Samuel Jackson BOYD married in Trumbull Co in 1888 & resided there. I am hoping to establish what happened to other members of his family. My father grew up in Trumbull Co & says he knew of only 1 cousin a Frank BOYD, who later moved away so he thought the family had only lived briefly in Trumbull The family if found in 1870 census consists of Parents: Robert & Sarah BOYD Children: Robert 23yrs (may not be at home) Eliza 19yrs a/a John 17yrs William 13yrs Samuel 11yrs may be other children born after 1860 census Would also love to connect with anyone researching this family. Nancy and Elizabeth Drake were sisters and they married the Custer brothers, Amos and Joseph Custer, II. Their father, Henry Drake, apparently died between 1850-1860. A "J." Custer had land next to Amos on the plat map. Who is the "J" Custer on the map. Section 72. Also, who is William Carns? Isaac Carns, age 66 years, deaf, was living with Amos Custer in 1860. He was living with the Elizabeth Honey (43 years of age) family in 1850, deaf. On the Federal Census, Brookfield Township, Trumbull Co., 1st June 1850, Dwelling 224, Family 230, he was a farmer and couldn't write. 60 years of age on that census. On the 1860 Federal Census: Dwelling 340, Family 333:Pg.44, it just said he was deaf. Can he possibly be a relative of the family? Elizabeth Carnes m. George Snyder. They had a daughter, Margaret that m. John Asa Arthurholt. Are the Arthurholt's related to the Custer family? John Arthurholt was an appraiser on the Joseph Custer Intestate record. John Arthurholt arrived from the east in 1825. Along with Arthurholt, were his three sons, Eli, Asa, and Daniel who obtained tracts of land adjoining each other. Others of the Arthurholt and Lafferty famiies were buried in the plot during a span of nearly a hundred years. Most passed away at early ages which seemed to be a trait of both families. Last known burial in the Arthurholt cemetery was John Arthurholt in 1926. Joseph Custer also appears for the first that I know of 22 Dec 1825, when Samuel E. Custer was b. in Hartford Twp. They moved to Burgh Hill 1826. Norma Rice 12929 16 Mile Road Rodney, MI 49342 nbrice@!net-port.com
Norma, You might want to look at a publication Called "Ohio Lands - A Short History" it is available though the State of Ohio's office of the Auditor. I ordered one by mail several years ago and refer to it regularly. It is now available online at: http://www.auditor.ohio.gov/Auditor/Publicat/Publicat.HTML It is an Adobe Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) so you will need to have the Acrobat Reader to view it. There is a button at the bottom of the screen which will link you to the Adobe page if you don't already have the reader. Maggie Zimmerman has put a web version of the publication online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohfrankl/Land/ohlands.html I'm no expert, and you'll need to check into this further, but according to a drawing on page 8, it looks like T2 would be what is today Coitsville Twp., Mahoning Co. and T3 would be Hubbard Twp. in Trumbull Co. Part of what is now Mahoning County was until 1846 a part of Trumbull. If T3 is in fact Hubbard Township, you might want to contact the "Hubbard Historical Society" they have a web page, and you can ask questions by clicking on the little mailbox on the page http://www.hubbard.lib.oh.us/pages/Organizations/historical.htm As for General George Armstrong CUSTER, he was born 1839 in New Rumley north of Cadiz, in Harrison County, the son of Emanuel Henry (December 10, 1806 - November 17, 1892) and Maria Ward Kirkpatrick CUSTER (May 31, 1807 - June 13, 1882). His parents were married on April 14, 1836 in New Rumley. (Maria was his second wife, his first was Matilda VIERS) I do not know if he was living in Mercer Co., PA before moving on to Harrison Co., OH. I found the General's ancestry at "The Custer Genealogy Home Page" http://www.jps.net/dcuster/ You might also want to take a look at "The Castor Association Homepage" at http://members.tripod.com/~EbneterG/index-9.html They have quite a few Custer links. Hello All, In the interest of extending the reach of information about our ancestors, I'm doing an experiment. I have added the mailing list for Trumbull County (OHTRUMBU-L)to the address list for notifications on new posts to the Trumbull County OHGenWeb GenConnect Query Board. So hopefully, you will start seeing notifications that a query has been posted to the Trumbull County Board. These GenConnect Queries are searchable, and each time a query is posted the surnames are added to the Trumbull County surname list and are searchable by Surname Helper. Please let me know if you like this, if the list decides it's an annoyance, I'll turn it off. Happy Hunting! Hope you make a connection! This message is for all who may be interested. During the American Civil War, the Ohio National Guard regiments were originally part of Ohio Governor William Dennison's "Militia of the Reserve" plan, whereby citizens statewide would have militia training in case of emergencies. Most of these Militia of the Reserve units expressly asked to be enrolled as Home Guards, so that they would serve only within the state. However, Ohio Governor John Brough made a new wrinkle in this militia training plan. The U. S. War Department pressured states to put more troops in the field in early 1864. Governor Brough responded on April 25, 1864, by calling all Home Guard units the "Ohio National Guard" and activated various units around the state of Ohio by companies or by battalions and regiments for 100 days of service unless sooner discharged. This was certainly a surprise to most militia units around the state (and draws immediate parallels of Vietnam and Desert Storm National Guard units). Thus, the Ohio National Guard was born... A typical Ohio National Guard unit was the 166th O.V.I. It was organized at Camp Taylor in Cleveland, and arrived at Washington, D.C in late May, 1864. The regiment was broken up by companies to man the various forts around the nation's Capital. The unit was forced to grueling duty when Confederate General Jubal Early and his veterans made a raid toward Washington in July 1864. Most of the soldiers were kept on alert for anywhere from six to eight days in a row until Early's army retreated back into Virginia. The 166th O.N.G. did not take part in a major battle from what I can see in Whitelaw Reid's "Ohio in the War" v.2, p.696. But these veterans can be proud that they helped save Washington, D.C., from capture. John C.
