    1. School for the deaf
    2. david weekley
    3. Hello, list. My name is Dave Weekley. My gg-grandparents were Peter Burnett and Bathsheba Axtell Burnett. He came from Trumbull County, she from Mercer County, PA. Both were deaf/mutes. Both were born in 1812. Given the distance and the difficulties of travel in those days, and infrequent occasion to leave the farm, it has always amazed me that these two deaf people found each other. I have assumed that they probably met at school - a school for the deaf. My question to the List: does anybody know of such a school that was operating in the vicinity in this time frame? I queried the Western PA School for the Deaf in Pittsburgh a month or so ago, but no one responded. Any help would be appreciated. Dave Weekley

    1. Johnson, Nathen
    2. I wonder if someone could suggest how I can track down some probate/guardianship records that exist in the following: Supposedly my g-g-g grandfather was Nathen Johnson(Johnston). This from an elderly relative. He married Anna Scott in Youngstown on 1/1/1807 (already confirmed). Of course Youngstown was in Trumbull at the time. Supposedly Nathen died around 1826 in Youngstown, leaving my g-g grandfather, John S. Johnson (Johnston), and 3 younger brothers: William, Moses and Nathen or Nathaniel. John was 19, but the others were young enough for guardians to be appointed, and supposedly records exist on this. My elderly relative, unfortunately, doesn't consider documentation to be important, so I don't yet have a verifiable link between Nathen Sr. and the named sons, especially John S. Can anybody give suggestions? Thanks, Doug Johnson, Grand Rapids, Michigan

    1. KENDALL HUNTING
    2. Carol Jo Thompson
    3. Hi all, In the mid 1800s several of my KENDALL ancestors (including 4th gr grandparents) are thought to have lived in Bloomfield, Trumbull County. The only other name I know that connects to this family is SMITH -- I believe there was Asa and his wife Olive; Orsamus and his wife Elmira. It is possible parts of this family spilled over into Ashtabula County, so would consider information about any KENDALLs from there also. Would love to connect with descendants of any of these families, or learn any bits and pieces YOU might know about any of these folks. Thanks. Hope to hear from someone soon. Carol Jo

    2. Ed Hagan
    3. This may be the sign that genealogy, like other collectibles, is about to get more expensive. Look at the web sites taken over by large corporations. We have become a market and someone who has something someone else wants will try to get the most for it. Maybe the predictions that genealogy will become the biggest use of the internet may bring about the actual reduction to a hobby of the wealthiest. I hope I am wrong. There is nothing you can do except pay for the letters. If you refuse, and nobody else wants them that bad, the price will come down. It is unlikely that someone will destroy something they hope to get some return for. Ed Hagan > Subject: I need advice, please! > Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 00:34:46 -0500 > From: "Wendy L. 3. Hi fellow researchers, I have a bit of a dilemma I'm hoping some of you might help me with. I have Civil War letters and a diary of my great-great-grandfather, Dwight H. Cory, which I've transcribed and put on the internet. He served in the 6th OH Cavalry out of Greene, Trumbull County, Ohio. The letters mention many of the other citizens at the time. A museum curator in Cincinnati wrote to me and told me of someone who has letters of a brother of Dwight's. She isn't of the family line; she bought the letters at an estate sale. There are 137 letters of the same time period and she's been offered, she says, $2000 for them. The museum had asked her to lend them and I asked her to copy them but we haven't had success. Neither the museum nor I are in the position to purchase the letters. She says her potential buyer will sell them individually and doesn't want them copied. What would you do? I hate to see a potential genealogical goldmine go to waste, but I don't know any descendants on that line to inform of the problem. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, Wendy Miller (letters are at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace/cory.htm )

    1. Photo WW 1 Vets
    2. Linda & John
    3. Hi List Thought I'd see if a photo I have might be useful to anyone. It's not particularly old as genealogy goes but if it includes a member of your family it's certainly worthwhile. I have a large photo of a gathering of WW 1 Vets (at least that's what it appears to me) taken in a meeting room with military photos on the wall where a dinner is being held. Probably an American Legion in Warren Ohio. Photo taken by Trinity Court Studios Nov 6 1943. I'd think related to Remembrance Day possibly. Some of the people have been named in handwritten script at the bottom of the page. I'll give the names I have & if they are useful to anyone let me know & I can scan the photo. Possibly I may have misinterpreted spellings as could the original writer. There are some blanks where the writer did not know the person's name Lt Col A E SIMON Sgt L W Rusiski (?sp) E A BERTALETT Melvin J MAAS Gustave A PETERMAN James DECOUREY Paul E DIGGAN I (or J) Lee AUSTIN Capt S C GREBE James E NICHOLSON Wm I LOVEJOY Charles N (or H) SAGER Raymond H BOYD (my grandfather) Hope this proves useful to someone Linda Phoenix AZ

    1. Please help me find this grave!
    2. Jean R. Lyles
    3. Will be in Trumbull Co. in the next couple weeks to root around and am working with another family researcher to find the grave of Robert Karr. We still own some land in the area, I'm not familiar with the roads mentioned, but I do have a map from 1874 with our farm and the 'suspected' gravesite on it, so any help is appreciated! Robert Karr believed to be buried with Nettie Parker (second wife) in the old Parker farm cemetery, one mile north and mile east of the Hartford-Greenville road (now known as the Hunt farm, near a fence post. Another source says that he's buried on a farm on Maysville road. George, Robert's son, owned the farm where Winnie and Dutch Karr lived. Just northeast is the William L. Parker farm, west of Moses Jewell, south of John Morford. That's now Orangeville-Kinsman road. It looks like section 9 of that tract (Granger?). 1. Can anyone tell me the current names of these roads? 2. Does anyone know who now owns the Parker farm. 3. I don't know that Nettie is William Parker's daughter, but I suspect from the proximity that this is true. Any other information on the Carr/Karr clan is welcome. We're trying to tie some loose ends together! Jean
