    3. Marge, "The History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties"- page 59 (Poland Twp.) refers to the widow Cowden and her sons William, Reynolds and Dr. Isaas P. Cowden. Isaac had a son, Samuel, and died 1855 at age 80. "Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve" mentions the following Cowdens in Gustavus: Truman and Eliza Simmons Cowden- page 373 George W. and Laura Annabel Cowden- page 374 Carol Jo. I checked Pioneer Women- no mention of Elmira Smith Peggy, No marriage listed for Collins/Stothart Gayle

    3. Thanks again, Linda. I guess that Poland was within the boundaries of Trumbull in the very early 1800's. Tonight at the FHL I found some 1810 tax lists from Trumbull. There were the Cowdens and the TWP. was Po. I assume for Poland. I may be in the right direction anyway. Really appreciate your help. Take care, MargeVan Hemert Bonita,CA ---------- >From: LRLBugsy@aol.com >To: OHTRUMBU-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [OHTRUMBU-L] William Cowden and Almira Day, m. abt. 1824 >Date: Wed, Aug 4, 1999, 6:56 PM > >Gustavus and Poland are about 35 miles apart, but were both settled very >early in the Western Reserve. 3. Hi Linda, Just noticed your posting about Poland, etal. Perchance do you have anything that tells any more about the teachers from Poland Academy in the early to mid-1800s than what I've seen in the History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties (Vol. II, pages66-67)? I am especially interested in knowing more about the career of "Miss Elmina Smith, assistant:" Specifically I'd like to know: was she Miss Elmina Smith OR was she Mrs. Elmira Smith? what year(s) did she work at Poland Academy? If there is a "wonderful source" of information dealing specifically with Poland Academy I'd love to hear about it. Thanks for any and all information.

    2. Gustavus and Poland are about 35 miles apart, but were both settled very early in the Western Reserve. Gustavus is in the northeastern corner of Trumbull County, and Poland is in the southeastern section of Mahoning County. Cowden is a name that comes up often in these parts. There were also early settlers in Wayne township, Ashtabula Co., which is where I was born and raised (southeastern corner). Good luck in your search. Blessings, Linda

    1. [OHTRUMBU-L] William Cowden and Almira Day, m. abt. 1824
    2. Marge Van Hemert
    3. William Cowden b. 27 Sept 1797, Trumbull, OH, married abt. 1824 an Almira Day b. 12 May 1801 VT. Their first four children were born in Ohio according to census records. They moved to Henderson Co., Illinois bef. 1840. William died in 1844 and Almira died in 1874 in Henderson Co. Would someone be willing to check for their marriage in the Trumbull Co. Mariage Index for me? I have found Cowdens in Trumbull, but as yet I have not been able to connect them to my William. Does anyone have a connection to William Cowden or Almira Day? I would sure like to find the parents of both William and Almira. Thanks for any and all suggestions. Marge Van Hemert Bonita, CA

    3. Thank you for your thought...but in this case Myra K BEERS was the daughter of Nancy DILLY and her first husband John BEERS... Myra wrote her mothers obituary.. 3. Hi Gayle... Pelton was her (Myra K.) married name...I know she was the d/o Nancy DILLY and John BEERS.. because she wrote her mothers obituary. I have seen it, I don't have it. Would it be too much trouble for you to send me what it says about Asa HAYNES and his children? Is there anything about his wife Sarah RICE? Is there anything written about Myra K PELTON? I am just full of questions aren't I? Asa's first wife was Sarah RICE her father was Isaac RICE / ROYCE. Isaac died 5 Apr 1842 and is buried in the old cemetery in Vernon Twp, Trumbull county, Ohio.. Is there anything in there about Isaac? He had another daughter who lived there, I think her name was Betsey..I don't know if she was married.. I remember hearing a story about her; On the days she made candy, she would put the candy in the widow sill and when the children passed her house on their way home from school, they would stop and buy some of her candy..
