I think he married again in the 1860s and had a second family. You're right about the diary -- it's so hard to know what was going on in these circumstances. And being a prisoner of war no doubt had a terrific impact on him -- Andersonville was a hideous place! e-mail me privately and I'll send all the info I have on Conrad Waldsmith.
