You might find the home village of William Fredrick Diebold mentioned in his 'intent to naturalization' and/or naturalization' papers. Look in the county (and higher) courts where he lived about 10 or more years after immigration. Better yet, the year of immigration and the year of naturalization are questions asked on the US census, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. Was there any such information in his obituary? Some people wrote birth and other data , such as place, in the front or center of a family bible. Would anyone in the family know the name of the ship on which he came? Who probated his estate? They might have kept his papers and mementos, maybe even a passport.
