The two best recent books would be Karl Grismer's "History of Akron and Summit County" published by the Summit County Historical Society c. 1952 and George Knepper's "Akron: City at the Summit" published in the 1990's. Grismer's book is closer to the late 19th century model -- a basic history with a lot of bios at the end (mostly of 20th century Akronites, but not exclusively); Knepper's book contains lots of photos along with the author's typically sharp insights with a large section at the end containing one page company histories. Hope this helps.
