Middlebury Manor is in the heart of Middlebury. Middlebury was and still is located at the intersection of East Market St. and East Exchange St. It is now just a section of east Akron. There is a Fire station and the Goodyear World Head Quarters are just up the street on Market. The East Akron Cemetery is located here too. They thought that Middlebury would have become the large city, but the Ohio cannel further west made Akron grow and not Middlebury. Rick
Terry, In Tallmadge Twp, you will find a Middlebury Cemetery. It is on the present day Newton St. almost down to Case Ave. The records for that cemetery are at the office of the East Akron Cemetery at 1135 East Market Street, Akron, OH (330) 784-7238 Barbara PHSchue@aol.com wrote: > > Terry, > The only Middlebury in Summit County that I am aware of is Middlebury Manor, > a nursing home in Akron. > > Pete > > ==== OHSUMMIT Mailing List ==== > RootsWeb Data Cooperative provides free space for the USGenWeb project, which includes the Summit County OHGenWeb site and this mailing list. What a coincidence. I was just going through some old newspapers the other day and ran across an article in a special sesquicentennial edition of the Akron Beacon Journal from June 29, 1975, that had an article about Middlebury. It was titled "MIDDLEBURY HAD A HEAD START ON FLEDGLING AKRON". The article states that in 1807 Capt. Joseph Hart bought 54 acres that were to become Middlebury. This was "in what is now the neighborhood of E. Market, Kent and Broad streets". Capt. Hart's daughter, Eliza, was born there on August 8, 1808. She later married Roswell Kent who "built one of Middlebury's finest homes". In 1825 Middlebury had a population of 500 and "was as big as Cleveland". Akron was established that same year. "On May 27, 1872, Middlebury became Akron's Sixth Ward".
Terry, The only Middlebury in Summit County that I am aware of is Middlebury Manor, a nursing home in Akron. Pete
Hi, Anyone ever heard of a Middlebury, being local to Summit Co.? I found one on a current map of Ohio but it is practically in Indiana. Thanks Terry Fillows4@aol.com Have a great day!

Civil War historian Paul Huff will be at the Buckley Chapel in Glendale Cemetery to give tours and information on the Beautiful Civil War memorial chapel built by the Buckley Post of the G. A. R. in the 1870s. The Chapel was recently refurbished and reopened for public view last year. If you have an Akron ancestor who was in the Civil War and was a member of the Buckley Post, his name is most likely inscribed on the walls. The wonderful stained glass windows are worth a visit. Paul will be there from 9am to 1pm Monday, May 27.
Dear Pete, Thank you for the referral to the website. Hopefully, I will be able to find something at the probate court. Anne
Ancestry.com has Ohio death records from 1958 to 1998 as part of their subscriber's database. You can see their list of free and subscriber only database at this address http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/alldblist.asp?s=97 I have also visited the Akron Health Center for researching their death files. You need to set up an appointment and hope things aren't too busy because you will be working with the same files that the staff is using. The older death records for Summit County are kept at the Records Room at the Court House. These cover 1868 to 1908 but may not be comprehensive. Here's a site for finding the location of various Summit County records http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohsummit/info/index.htm Hope this helps Pete Schueler
Are there death records available prior to 1870? Anne

In reference to that question the reply was a list of words can you apply on the Internet? I did not quite understand the reference. I do have the info on the Akron Health Center (no longer Morley Health Center) on E. Market St. Akron and though I have seen reference to being able to research there in their files I did not see where they even had room. Please advise.
