My apologies to all of those that had repeats of this same message. Because my folks are spread out all over the country, I felt it was necessary to connect with all of the counties of Ohio. I did not understand that I would get such unfriendly mail from some people. Some of them were helpful. After reviewing the Acceptable policy use at rootsweb, I did not see anything about mass mailings. If one exists would you please direct me to that? Because of my limited access to information, the Internet is all I have. I am not able to get to many locations people have suggested. Hi List, I am requesting an obit of my uncle. Elmer Mock, b 18 Aug. 1982 in Pa. He died in Akron March 1981 Thanks for any help. Maxine
Hi, Oh boy did this bring back memories... My daddy worked for B.F.Goodrich and Firestone. My Mom told me that Main St. in Akron was at one time coated with the rubber stuff....:) and he also brought use home rubber dollars... He got an award as an inventor there too and in the 1940s a $200.00 dollars check was a lot. And also every year it was down town to see the Christmas windows. I've not been home in 30 years. Oh where has the times gone? Emma in TX>

I think he died around November 3, 1899, because the last entry in his diary is late October, and someone pasted a newspaper clipping in the front of this diary regarding his GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) veterans group gathering for his funeral Wed, 3rd. It doesn't exactly say November 3, but there is a calendar for that year in the diary showing that November 3 fell on a Wed. The tragic thing about this last diary is that someone chose to tear out out all entries after Oct 21. You can easily see the ragged torn places. Was it too sad? Did it describe a fatal illness? BTW, in your reply you misspelled the name, it's Waldsmith, not Walsmith. Would like to hear from you with any information you have. This is fun!!
Can you give me more information about the look ups that the library does? Three others may have been around, but I'm not sure. Sun, Anderson and Goodrich. The "hook" factory could have been "book" factory. There was Saalfield Publishing, they printed children's books. There was also a Werner factory that published encyclopedias, but I'm not sure if they existed by 1920. I remember a book bindery, not sure if it was one of the above or not. All the above businesses are gone now. The blue collar factories are white collar offices. Many of the buildings have been torn down, turned into shopping areas, made into parking lots, etc, etc, etc. As a child, I remember that it was not unusual to go outside in the morining and find tiny black grit all over everything from the rubber factories. I rather doubt that there is anything held by the companies concerning workers from that time period. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for you, just in case.
We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a second (much better!) postcard image of the SUMMIT County Infirmary in Akron. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on OHIO on the table of states, and finally on SUMMIT on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

He served in the 107th Regiment, Company B, of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. My father was a civil war buff and I vaguely remember seeing his name on a monument at Gettysburg. I do know he was in a Confederate Prisoner of War camp, as we have a poem he wrote about this awful experience. I also have some diaries. I do not know how he ended up in Akron, Ohio, when apparently he must have lived in Pennsylvania at the time of the Civil War. He had, I believe, 4 or 5 children in Akron, one of them my grandfather, Harry Waldsmith. This name was also my father's name, and is my brother's name. My brother still lives in Akron. Fascinating to think he might have had another family or at least a child in Pennsylvania.
No, it is in Medina County.
