Jane, I would be interested in the address to purchasse the book. Can you tell me how far back it gives ideas to research. I'm trying to research in Wayne Co, OH in 1840 and earlier were there are no recorded birth or death records. Does it suggest anything for when you hit those types of brick walls? We don't have a lot of information on the origins of my grandfather, Edwern "E." LaROCQUE. He thought that he was born in January 31, 1902 in Akron. His parents died when he was young (he did not specify when), and he went to live with an uncle. He did not know his parents names, so he was probably very young when they died. Apparently his uncle was not kind to him and he ran away from home to California when he was 14. He died December 29, 1965. I visited Akron 6 years ago, but did not discover anything. I looked through birth records, death records and city directories but could not find any reference to him or his parents. I have since continued the search from home (Auburn, CA), but I still haven't discovered anything. I have his SS card application, military records, etc. but haven't found any additional information. I've been trying to find where the name "Edwern" came from, but I haven't discovered anything. I have looked through the census for 1900 and 1910, but neither listed his name and since I don't know the names of his parents it's hard to know if I have the correct family. Any ideas would be appreciated. I did not know that some French people from Alsace France settled in Akron. Thanks. Thank you all for your ideas. Isn't that the Civil War Chapel/monument at Glendale Cemetery? Linda Taylor
Yes, that is the civil war monument at Glendale Cemetery. Jean in CA
What would help is what year he was born and possibly if known what year he died? As there are cemetery records. As there were French who settled in Akron probably from Alsace France. I have a Le Count/La Count and I cannot find anything about him but the census said he was from France.
Jean in CA asking about the Civil War Monument for her descendant but where is it located????
I stopped the Cuyahoga County List because I went on vacation and there was dozens of e-mails every night. I think it was the Rootsweb. Thanks for your help on the marriage index and the obits. I did go through the fantastic necrologly file,

Colette, I don't have any suggestions for general or Ohio genealogy guides but the census is always a good bet for a starting place. I just took a look at the 1920 Ohio census and saw an entry for an Audward? LaRocque age 19, born Ohio living with his widowed mother, Anna E. LaRocque age 39 and his widowed maternal grandmother (age unknown) Mary Ford. The family was in Toledo, Lucas County and recorded on ED 132 Sheet 25A (Ward 12). The family also shows up in the 1900 census in Lucas County, ED 103, Page3A and in the 1910 census in Lucas County. This might be your grandfathers family. It's worth checking. Good Luck, Pete Schueler
Dear Collette, At a recent genealogy conference, I purchased Ohio Genealogical Research by Dr. George K. Schweitzer. It's four chapters are: (1) Ohio Background; (2) Types of Records; (3) Record Locations; and, (4) Research Procedure & County Listings. If you have an interest, let me know, and I will give you his address. It appears to be a self-published book. I paid $12.50 for it. I haven't had time to scan it yet, but it does seem to cover the basics. Bonne chance, Jane Miller
Hi Collette, The reference book I use almost daily is "Ohio Genealogical Research" by George K. Schweitzer, Ph. D., Sc.D. It is available from the Ohio Genealogical Society (http://ogs.org) for $12 for members and $14 for non-members plus shipping and tax for OH residents. Hello Everyone! I've hit the brick wall in researching my grandfather, Edwern "E." LaROCQUE, who said that he was born in Akron, Ohio. There are no records for him, that I have been able to find. I'm thinking that I need to get back to the basics. Can anyone recommend a good book for doing research in Ohio? Or perhaps a general genealogy book that will remind me what different avenues I need to cover for research? Thank you. Collette

Hi list, Does anyone know a person who will take a photo of the Civil War monument and include my Samuel BRANDON'S name in the picture? Thanks, Jean in CA
I'm subscribed to two lists from Cuyahoga county, but quite frankly they are both rather inactive since the marriage index and obit files have been put on line for Cuyahoga County. Try these links for more info on your Moritz and Cooney families: www.cpl.org and follow links to the necrology file http://www-catalog.cpl.org/CLENIX for later obit index http://198.30.212.15/ for marriage index searchable by bride or groom Barb ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mayboleayr@aol.com> To: <OHSUMMIT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 08, 2002 12:47 PM Subject: [OHSUMMIT-L] How do you Subscribe to Cuyahoga county Roots Web > I am researching the Moritz and Cooney families in Cuyahoga County and I seem > not to be able to subscribe to them.
