    2. Brenda Gaines
    3. Hi List- My first posting; I am looking for information about an Hungarian or Yugoslavian immigrant who lived in Summit Co., Ohio and served in the Ohio State Congress as a Representative, I believe. 1930-1956??His name was John Smith. Representative John Smith. John Smith was married to Elizabeth Tolson (Toulson/ Towlson sp?). John and Elizabeth Smith moved to Maryland where he died in the 1960s and she in the 1980s. But his name wasn't really John Smith! It was Liptay (Liptai, Lipte, Liptaj sp?). I don't know if John was his real first name, maybe Janos, Janos Liptay? There was a John Smith listed in the 1930 census of Summit Co., Ohio, single , 34 years old, b:1896, and from Yugoslavia. I don't know if that's him or not? but if it is he probably got married in Ohio. They were Catholic. I read about a John Smith running on a Socialist Party ticket for public office, and a Hungarian Socialist movement, but I don't know if he was the John I'm looking for or not? Elizabeth Tolson -Smith was very interested in Asian art I've heard and she may have died while traveling, but her residence was in Maryland. Maybe she was from Maryland and that's where they were married? They probably got married in the 1940s, like 1948 maybe? They sent their boys to a Catholic boys school, Xavier, I think, maybe in Kentucky or Ohio?? There was a Liptay that entered the Country at Baltimore in 1907, but Janos Liptay was crossed out and Yaniko or Janiko scratched in? Maybe that was the kind of incident that got his name changed to John Smith? John Smith must have had a lot of support to run for public office, like other Liptay family members, and he must have been educated and able to speak English and have money and idealism or whatever it is that makes people want to run things. Two of John and Elizabeth's great grandchildren are my grandchildren, they are extremely beautiful and smart. So John and Elizabeth probably were too. If anyone is researching any Liptays or Tolson's or Smiths in Summit Co., Ohio, or nearby counties, or has access to county records regarding the representatives of yore, i would certainly appreciate help. Thanks, Brenda.

    1. Genealogy Discussion Group
    2. Donna Gruber
    3. The Great Lakes Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists is sponsoring an Advanced Genealogy Discussion Group. The next meeting is on Saturday, May 20, 2006. The purpose of the group is to discuss advanced genealogical methodology as presented in case studies that have appeared in various scholarly genealogical publications. The group meets the third Saturday of the month, starting at 10:00 am, at one of the Akron-Summit County Public Library meeting rooms. The library is located at 60 South High St., Akron, OH. The meetings last about one and one-half hours. The discussions are free but pre-registration is required. Any experienced genealogical researcher is welcome to enroll. As a pre-requisite, participants should be familiar with Dr. William M. Litchman's article, "Teaching Analysis, Logic, and the Research Process: A Seminar Approach", from the NGS News Magazine, Nov/Dec 2000, pages 340-343. Each participant is requested to read several times, in advance of the meeting, the article to be discussed at the meeting. The article chosen for the May 20, 2006 discussion appeared in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, December 1993. It is titled "To My Daughter and the Heirs of Her Body: Slave Passages as Illustrated by the Latham-Smithwick Family" beginning on page 270. To register, or for any questions, contact Donna Gruber at [email protected] or call (419) 846-3533.

    1. KERECMAN
    2. Janean Ray
    3. I don't have access to directories but looked up the streets. The one street is most likely KIPLING. If you do a search on Yahoo maps etc. you will see where Kipling is located. It is right of St. Rt. 8. Laffer St. is probably about a 10 min drive from there. However I looked him up in Rootsweb.com Social Security Death Index. You can order his Social Security application. It will tell you his parents, where he lived, where he worked etc. Most of the people by that name were in Pennsylvania. Here is what I found in Ohio JOHN KERECMAN 27 Aug 1920 Jan 1972 (last residence - not specified) (last benefit - none specified) 288-12-5526 Issued in Ohio Now there was also THIS JOHN KERECMAN 16 May 1895 May 1975 44266 (Ravenna, Portage, OH) (none specified) 288-12-4268 Ohio http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi?lastname=KERECMAN&start=21 http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm#numbers Reasons you might not find someone in the SSDI Social Security officially was begun in 1937, with some payments being paid as early as 1940. However, the Social Security Death Index is the computerized index to deaths reported and/or death benefits paid out starting in 1962. The SSDI includes a few pre-1962 entries, but the great majority of those included in this index are from 1962 through the present time. While the limitations of dates may exclude your family member, other reasons that your ancestor may not be included in the SSDI might have to do with his or her occupation or lack thereof. Prior to the 1960s, farmers, housewives, government employees, non-employed individuals, and those with a separate retirement plan might not have had a Social Security number. It was not until 1988 that all children had to have Social Security numbers. 3. Hello, the Akron-Summit County Library has several directories. I've simply called them, requested the year and family I need, and if they have it, they can either mail the page right out, or scan it, and e-mail it to you. I just recieved my family's page from the 1922 directory. Here is their phone number. When you call, ask to speak to the Special Collections Department. That department has told me you can also request these types of things online from their site, but I haven't needed anything else since my 1922 city directory. But I have recieved pages from the Akron City Directories both by e-mail and postal mail from them here in California. Good luck.
