Author: aandreje Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.stark/5025/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My question deals with early land records (Ohio: 1818-1821) which I am researching. In the Tax Records - 1819 - Stark County, Ohio there is a column listing "Title". For each land record, there is an entry in the title column showing the type of title, i.e., Pat[ent], Deed, Cont[ract], or Agent. My question is what does the term "Contract" refer to? Does it refer to a land contract transaction with another individual? Or was this a special kind of title? The amount of acreage covered by this "contract" title is relatively large (547 acres). I have gone through the records for the year prior 1816-1818 and cannot find a transfer or purchase of this land to my ancestor. Can anyone offer some additional insight or point me to other resources? Thanks, Jean Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
