I am very interested in your female ancestor, at this point, too. Who was she and with whom did she serve until found out? There were many women, approximately 1000, that actually served during the CW. There were some who actually served at Gettysburg,too. I believe that many more did, but some left of their volition when things got too "hot." But, of course, some were killed and never found out. Of course, too, practially all these women changed their names. It was, and is, difficult to find out exactly who and where they served. Like you, nothing was fair for the females back then just as there are areas today of unfairness in many areas of our business culture whether military or otherwise.
