    1. [OHSTARK] Bachtel pioneer and murderer
    2. The Bachtels were among the earliest settlers in Jackson Twp., and I've noticed many land records under their names in Jackson Twp.?In researching this on-line I have found that it is claimed in one post that Christian Bachtel murdered his wife in Stark Co. It was claimed he "hit her in the head with the back of an ax, while she was asleep, " and he was the first person executed in Stark Co. for the crime of murder.?? The source for this was listed as "A History of Capital Crimes in Stark County, Ohio, and a Sketch of Four Murderers". Published by Democrat Steam Printing House, 1880."? If anyone has access to that please share further details, or confirm this if possible.? There are conflicting dates given for the deaths of both Christian and his wife Katherine. If this account is correct then she may have been murdered in October of 1833, and he was executed Nov. 22 of the same year.? Jacob Bachtel may have been Christian's brother, as he was born just two years previous.? Jacob father, and therefore Christian's father too, was likely another Jacob Bachtel, who was a minister of the gospel.? It seems unusual that one of his sons would commit such a horrendous crime, but some children aren't like their parents at all.??Then, like today, domestic disputes can end tragically. ?As far as I know they were members of the Reformed church. My family was distantly related to Jacob Bachtel's wife, and later?lived in the same place the Bachtels left from in PA, and may have followed to Stark County some twenty years later, as they settled in the same Jackson Twp. and attended the same Reformed church.? I know of no early records of this church, however. A few from my family also moved on to the same St. Joseph Co. IN where your Christian Bachtel's son moved to.
