Joann, After reading your posting, and Sarah's, I inquired of my parents, who were born/raised in Carroll/Stark Counties. Both were born in 1918, and obviously could not offer any direct answer to your questions. However, they did say that there were a number of brickyards in the areas and mining for necessary materials was done mostly by strip mining. Sometimes slate or shale would be encountered in trying to get to the coal or other necessary minerals. Wish I could offer more, but there were many strip mines in the area and that was all they could offer. My Dad worked most of his life in brickyards and some strip mining. Good luck on your quest. If I can be of further help, please don't hesitate.
