    3. The following obituary appeared in The Alliance Review in 1925. I post it in hopes someone will be researching this family and have some information on Sarah's other siblings. At this time I'm assuming that my gr-grandfather, Eli Varner, was her brother. Any help would be appreciated. Pioneer Who Came Here in Covered Wagon Dies Sunday Mrs. Sarah C. Ward, 83 years, pioneer resident of Alliance passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Shallenberger, 33 Keystone Street, after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Ward had been in failing health for some time. She was born December 23, 1842 in Carroll County, PA, the daughter of the late Jacob and Susan Varner. The family moved to Alliance from Penna. When Mrs. Ward was a year old, making the trip in covered wagons. She had resided in this city since that time. Her husband, the late John Ward, Sr. died in 1898. Mrs. Ward retained her faculties up to the end and was always eager to tell of the early history of Alliance to the younger generations. She was a member of the Friends Church. Surviving are four children: Mrs. Shallenberger, John Ward Jr., Jesse Ward and Frank Ward. The later Mrs. Roy Haverstack was a daughter. Surviving also are two grandchildren, Donald Ward and Mrs. Bonner Morgan and two brothers, Jess and Preston Varner, all of this city. Funeral services will be held at the Shallenberger home on Keystone Street, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be at the Alliance cemetery. Friends may call at any time.
