    3. Was there a time limit to finalize your citizenship from the time you filed your intent form in 1840? Could you complete the process in another county or state? Also doe anyone know if one could have been an officer even in the home guard if that person was not a citizen?

No, there was no time limit with regard to elapsed time between "first papers" and "final papers" until 1906. Declarations of Intention filed on or after 27 September, 1906, lapsed after seven years. Various courts handled the elapsed time issue differently for situations where "first papers" were filed before this date, but the Petition for Naturalization was filed after then. >Could you complete the process in another county or state?... Yes. You only had to prove you had filed a declaration of intention (if one was required for your situation) in a court of record *somewhere* in the U.S.A when you filed your petition for naturalization. Both parts of the process were generally done in a suitable court convenient to where one lived at the time. Rollie
