    1. Re: [OHSTARK] Record Years
    2. Ohio began registering deaths [and births] in 1867. They were recorded in Registers until after December 1908 and kept only by the County. Very seldom were parents of deceased recorded on these registers. After December 1908 the counties were required to send a copy to Vital Statistics in Columbus, OH. A few counties have birth and deaths from as early as 1840 - but those are rare. If you are looking for a death in Stark Co., OH, let me know. As corresponding secretary to Stark Co., Chapter OGS, I currently have a copy of Stark Co., OH Deaths publication covering 1867-1908 published and for sale by our Society. Please keep in mind not all deaths were recorded during the 1867-1908 timeframe. I, for one, have a g-g-grandfather who died in Massillon, Stark Co., OH in 1888 and his death was never recorded. The only way I found his death was via a newspaper article and then I confirmed his burial. And, unfortunately, my paternal grandmother's birth was never recorded but her siblings were. Ah, the "challenges" of genealogy. <smile> Shirley Houk In a message dated 3/27/2006 3:33:07 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Can someone please tell me when Ohio began to record death 'certificates'? I'm looking for one in 1892. Thank you, Mercedes Farley
