I hope you are researching the female soldiers with the intention of publishing. I am very interested in your female ancestor, at this point, too. Who was she and with whom did she serve until found out? There were many women, approximately 1000, that actually served during the CW. There were some who actually served at Gettysburg, too. I believe that many more did, but some left of their volition when things got too "hot." But, of course, some were killed and never found out. Of course, too, practially all these women changed their names. It was, and is, difficult to find out exactly who and where they served. Like you, nothing was fair for the females back then just as there are areas today of unfairness in many areas of our business culture whether military or otherwise. I also have a female ancestor from Ohio (although not from Stark County) who served about three years while posing as a man and under a man's name. It took getting wounded in action for her to be found out by a doctor who treated her for serious wounds, which ultimately resulted in her discharge from the military. She later married and had children, then had to go through a great ordeal to get the soldier's pension that was given to all male soldiers. Times have not changed in that respect even up to today, but that is another issue entirely. :-( Good luck to you in your search. Jan, Not sure if this is the right woman but a Mary Scaberry took the name of Charles Freeman and served with the 52nd OH Infantry. The link below has a brief paragraph about her and shows her discharge original. The paper does say she is from Columbus but I'd look further than that. I have been working on a research project and came across this info a few days ago so your question is timely. http://www.outlawwomen.com/WomenSoldiersoftheCivilWar.htm The next site is about a book written about Stark Co. soldiers in the Civil War and mentions a female from North Lawrence. http://starkcountyohiocivilwar.com/index.html Jan too. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified simply as Carrie BENSON'S boy. The photograph was taken at the J. C. Haring Studio in Massillon, Ohio likely in the 1880's with the boy in the photograph appearing to be about 4-5 years old at the time it was taken. In addition to the reference to his Mother, someone has also written "nephew of Katie MINNICK" on the back of the photograph. This photograph was recovered along with others belonging to the SMITH, MINNICK, HOFFMAN, and BEARDSLEY Families. I am hoping to be able to return the photograph to a member of the BENSON Family so that it can once again become a cherished family possession. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Greetings, I would like to thank everyone who replied to my initial posting. I appreciate all of your efforts as this trip to Ohio is very important to me. I tried to reply to each response personally and if there is anyone I missed, please forgive me. I had forgotten to mention in my post that I had read that the Finney family migrated with the Murphy and McFadden families from PA to Belmont County Ohio. I have not been able to confirm that my Finney's were included in this migration but when my brick wall ancestor and his spouse passed away (Isaac B. and Rachel Finney) my great grandfather lived with the McFaddens and the rest of the minor children were taken in by Josiah Murphy and the guardianship bond were paid by a Benjamin Murphy, all of Tuscarawas County Ohio. I would like to learn more about this "Clans" migration. I have found through my research that Isaac and Rachel were friends with the Robert and Margaret Berkshire, William and Mahala Fillabaum, John and Elizabeth Daughtery, Benjamin and Elizabeth Van Fossen, James and Ann Moore, and Eliza Brown. Thanks again to all of you - I wish I could hug you all. Gerald Finney Fresno, California
