I need to correct my previous post. To the best of my knowledge my grandmother grew up in Nimishillen Twp. However, I find her family in Canton, Ward 1 in 1900. My photo was taken in 1897. Their address was 1209 W. Tuscarawas. What I was wondering was if it would have been near Nimishillen Twp. instead of in it? Either way, McKinley Ave. School may have been near the address on W. Tuscarawas unless they had lived in another location in 1897. Michele Wendell Way wrote: > My first thought was that this might be Wells School located in the S.W. end > of downtown Canton. My first thought was that this might be Wells School located in the S.W. end of downtown Canton. It is (or was) located at an intersection of, I think, 6th Street and, apparently, McKinley Avenue - although there is a Wells Avenue in that area as well. ??? I should remember - I am a native and 35 year resident of Canton ! Age takes its toll. I know of two more schools that do not appear there. My grandpa attended Roush School in Jackson Twp. on Portage Road near McDonaldsville. It was a one-room schoolhouse and I have a picture of it. He attended there from 1906-1913. My grandma attended the school at Midway (Middlebranch Road and, I believe, Smith-Kramer Road). It is now Maple Grove Mennonite Church. She attended there from 1909-1917, and went away to the Academy at Manchester College to finish high school there. I have to dig up the old photos as they are in our warehouse in storage until we get property in our (relatively) new location. There's got to be a coincidence somewhere. My John H. Sonnhalter did not arrive in the USA until 21 Sep 1872. But, he ended up in Massillon, so, there's got to be some connection. He had several children by his first wife(I don't know her name.) Then he married my great-great grandmother. They did not have any children that I know of. The book I got that information from was published in 1902. There are other Sonnhalters who settled in Ohio and were probably all related--I saw a group in Tuscarawas County and there is a group now in Cleveland. I have not gotten that far in compiling any information on the relationship of those people but I will let you know if I find out anything. The family came from Saarland, Wehrden and Saarbrucken. Philip's father was John (Johannes) and was born in Saarland (?date) and died in 1862 in Massillon. His wife was Catherine Luzemburger (or Luxemberger) was born in Germany(?date) and died in Massillon in 1856. They came to the US in 1855. I will check to see what I have but I doubt if it will include the first husband's name. Have you tried the Massillon library genealogical section or the Stark County library--if he had a will, it might have gone through probate. Or old property records if you know the address of the boarding house. Stark County might have a listing for the obituary. You can have them do a search of the obit.--google stark county library, go to genealogy division. You can bring up a form. Also, you could contact the Ohio bureau of vital statistics and request info based on the info of what you have--the widow's name. I will be going up to Canton soon to the court house for genealogy work--if you could let me know anything else you have, I could check into it. Each of these extensive gazeteer and immigrant guides contain the description of places and place names, many of which are no longer found on contemporary maps, including: cities, towns, villages, settlements, schools, post offices, transportation routes and schedules, and much more. Historical Guides and Gazetteer CD's may also include maps of the period providing cartographic reference to 19th century places identified and discussed in the literature. Also included are hundreds of advertisements by contributing businesses providing historical insight into the goods, services and the merchants that made them available during the 19th century. Anyone interested in the history of these regions will find this material useful. ------------------------------------------------------------ HISTORIC ATLAS SERIES (includes 19th century atlases of IA, IL, IN, KY, KS, MI, MN, NE, OH, PA, VA and WI) http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/has.html The Historic Atlas Series CD's are digital reproductions of 19th century maps and historical atlas data in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The Adobe Reader software is required to view, manipulate and print PDF data is included on each CD. States with maps and atlases currently available are shown in the graphic to the right. 19th century geographic and statistical data are useful to historians, genealogists and researchers with an interest in the landscape and cultural setting of this period. Early county maps may contain many places that no longer exist or that have been obscured over time. Atlases with statistical data provide vivid detail of 19th century pioneer lifestyles. Details on early maps are often difficult to read and these are no exception; however, by virtue of the Adobe PDF formatting, these documents may be inspected and printed at high levels of magnification without additional digital distortion; something that simply cannot be accomplished with paper reproductions and photocopies.
