    3. I'm researching the family of Dr. James and Jane Shaw of Massilon, OH. Supposedly, the family emigrated to Massilon, from Scotland, in 1832 and then moved to Zanesville in 1840. Their children included James, John B., William H., Hiram W., Augustus D. and Albert. It appears that William, Hiram and Augustus were born in Massilon. As I am new to the list and new to researching in Stark County, I would appreciate any suggestions anyone may have. Thanks, Bob Krebs

In a pension deposition given in 1930, he stated that he had six brothers and one sister. Joshua's mother was Catharine Harry, daughter of James Harry, most likely by his first marriage to Margaret Hammond. James Harry was born in approx. 1788-1790 in Franklin Co., PA, son of Titus Harry and Catharine Rowles. I believe that Margaret Hammond was born in Franklin, PA as well, daughter of Martin Hammond and Margaret Brindle. James Harry died 2-26-1860 in Plain Twp., Stark Co., OH, but I am unsure of Margaret Hammond's date of death. The family of Margaret Hammond's brother, Jacob Hammond, is enumerated two families away in the 1850 census. Joshua's father is named as George Lantz. I have been unable to find any record of his marriage to Catharine Harry or any census records of the family. Catharine Harry was married first to a Samuel Hill. They had a son, Samuel Franklin Hill, b.11-26-1833 in Stark Co., Ohio. Samuel Franklin Hill died 10-15-1927 in Nelson, Portage, Ohio. Catharine then apparently married George Lantz. I am aware of the following descendants: 1.George Lantz +Catharine Harry 2.Joshua Lantz b.3-9-1845 Stark Co., OH d.8-4-1933 Kansas City, MO +Mary E. Howser m.2-2-1869 Cass Co. OH census, Plain Twp., living with his uncle James Morris Harry, son of James Harry and his second wife Susan Morrow. Both Joshua and his brother Solomon named James Morris Harry as their guardian in 1863, while their brother Daniel named his uncle George Nelson (husband of Catharine Harry's sister Barbary) as his guardian. Daniel remained a lifelong citizen of Stark Co., OH. Joshua moved after the war to Michigan, and then later to KS. I do not have any knowledge of what happened to Solomon. Of other brothers and a sister, I am unaware as well. The fate of the parents is unknown, and Joshua and Daniel were never clear on the birthplace of their father. Any information or leads on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Leon Lants - llants@webtv.net --WebTV-Mail-15061-3651--

    1. [OHSTARK] John Correll Jr. of Stark County
    2. I just ran across a record of John Correll Jr. of Stark County purchasing land in Wyandott County (up near Upper Sandusky in Rev. John Stewart's territory) in 1846 (certificate 14219). Did some inquiring and dug up a land purchase of a John Correll for that Stark County land on July 17 1834 (deed is in Vol M, page 22). Does anyone know who this John Correll is and where he came from? Apparently his father's name is John (hence his title of Jr.). Could his father be the John Corl born in Keystone State on Jan 05, 1788? per Stark County history book. \ Any help would be appreciated.

    1. [OHSTARK] 10 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET MORE FROM ONLINE RESEARCH TIME
    2. Claudette Rogers
    3. this comes from anotherr list I belong to and thought it might help someone else too... ~Claudette ======================================================= 10 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET MORE FROM ONLINE RESEARCH TIME by Juliana Smith <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= 1) Think of a trip to a computer like a trip to the library. You wouldn't go to the library unprepared, so do a little preparatory work before you log on. I keep a 3-ring binder with printed pedigree charts and family group sheets on my desk. The binder also contains blank pages where I can make notes of ideas for new research strategies, sites I want to investigate later, etc. 2) With the immense array of resources available online (and new sites going up every day) it is impossible to keep track of where you have searched, when, and for what. Keeping a research log of sites visited, searches performed, and results can save much duplicated effort. I keep my log in a spreadsheet form and keep the log open as I search. Then I can simply copy/paste the URL into the document and keep track of my searches as I go. With Web sites that are constantly being updated and/or added to, you may want to go back every so often to recheck them. Your log can tell you when you last checked a site. Those with a preference for a paper copy, can use the downloadable Research Calendar at: http://www.ancestry.com/download/forms.htm to record searches. 3) Determine what information you need. While it can be fun to wander aimlessly about the Web, most of us have a limited amount of time that we can spend surfing for ancestors. Go over your research and decide what information you are looking for. Once you have decided on a particular piece of information that is missing, pursue it. 4) Don't just search for surnames. If you know your ancestors were from a particular location, find out all you can about their hometown or homeland. While learning about an area, you will often find clues that will open up new avenues of research. 5) Learn. How-to, beginner sites, and specialized sites dealing with specific record types, geographic areas, repositories, and/or ethnicity abound. Use them to locate new resources and methods for conducting your search. The Ancestry.com Learning Center contains a wide variety of information and helpful articles, all in one place at: http://www.ancestry.com/research/index.htm 6) If you don't find the information you seek online, use online sources to determine what offline avenues are available to you. 7) When you find a pertinent piece of information, make sure you record the full bibliographic citation. If it is not available on the Web site, write the webmaster and request it. Citing your sources is critical both online and off. 8) Post queries on sites like FamilyHistory.com (http://www.familyhistory.com), where large numbers of researchers visit regularly and where the people that may have the information you seek have a good chance of seeing your post. You might also want to consider posting your GEDCOM online. By submitting your tree to large collections like the World Tree (http://www.ancestry.com/worldtree/tree.htm), you can also increase your chances of locating elusive cousins. 9) Once you log off, follow through by proving your findings with original primary source documents. Online resources are secondary sources at best, and often contain errors. Additionally, there is often much more information in the original documents. 10) Have some fun with it! Every so often when you have the time, go off and explore a bit. You'll be surprised at what you can find in unexpected places! ________________________________________________________ NetZero - We believe in a FREE Internet. Shouldn't you? 3. I want to mention what a wonderful job the folks at the Stark County Library are doing to help local and long distance researchers!! I have heard quite a few positive comments over the past few months on this, and I would like Lauren and the crew over there to know how much it is appreciated. Clare Clare L.
