Does anyone know if there is a book that lists the Wills that were made/probated prior to 1900 in Stark County? Does the library in Canton have a Cemetery book that lists the people who are buried in Westlawn Cemetery? Kay Davidson ldkd19@idt.net
Joann, After reading your posting, and Sarah's, I inquired of my parents, who were born/raised in Carroll/Stark Counties. Both were born in 1918, and obviously could not offer any direct answer to your questions. However, they did say that there were a number of brickyards in the areas and mining for necessary materials was done mostly by strip mining. Sometimes slate or shale would be encountered in trying to get to the coal or other necessary minerals. Wish I could offer more, but there were many strip mines in the area and that was all they could offer. My Dad worked most of his life in brickyards and some strip mining. Good luck on your quest. If I can be of further help, please don't hesitate. Dear Joann, I read your posting (below). Although I can't respond to your question, it does interest me in that my family had/has the Whitacre-Greer Fireproofing Co. I wonder if there is some connection to this business? Could your word in ? be "Greer?" The family (not my line) still runs the business to my knowledge. Maybe it has some records to help you out. The current address is: Whitacre-Greer, 1400 S. Mahoning Ave., Alliance, OH 44601 My great-grandfather, Corwin Clay Whitacre, would be of the same vintage as your husband's great-grandfather. I recently ordered the death certificates of several of my husband's ancestors. I am wondering if anyone could help me acquire an obituary or newspaper article about the accident that caused the death of my husband's great-grandfather, Charles Janson who was born Feb. 11, 1861, Pike Twp., stark Co. His death certificate says he was "crushed by fall of slate in Whitacre -?- mine (-?- may be "Falls" I cannot make out the word--it may also be something that begins with a "G"). Place of Death is listed as Brown Twp., Carroll, Co. and date is Feb. 21, 1918. He resided in Waynesburg prior to his death. Hello fellow listers. In "Passenger & Immigration Lists: 1999 Suppl." I see on page 425 where two Strassels: Peter & Joseph naturalized in Stark County. The source given is "Index to the Naturalization Records for Stark County, OH 1809-1852." This is an index compiled by Lauren Landis and is available at the Start County District Library in Canton. Does anyone have this book and would someone please tell me what it says about my Strassels? I do believe they are my g-grandfather and his brother who later came to Cincinnati. I have very little information about them--just Peter's year of birth which was about 1807. Thank you, Buffy

Dear List Members: Hope to obtain some assistance tracing a location from the 1840 to the 1850 Census. If the notes I have been provided are correct, I am tracing a family recorded at "Uniontown" in the 1840 Census. Can anyone tell me if this location still known as Uniontown and part of Stark Co. as of 1850? Thank you. --Mari

I am looking for John Rice who married mary Ann in Pennsylvania. I am not sure of the marriage date or where. But they had a daughter Elizabeth or (Betsy) and a son Christopher Rice. They could of all moved to Stark County Ohio. Elizabeth married John Arntz around 1842 in Stark County and Christopher married Sarah Brown around 1850 in William's County, Ohio. Elizabeth was born 1805 and Christopher was born around 1810. They died in Michigan. I sure hope I can get more information on this family this is really a struggle for me. Thanks, Hope Farris
