    1. [OHSTARK] Ohio Researchers NOTICE
    2. Bob Strock
    3. >From a side bar in "The Beacon Journal", Akron, Ohio 15 Dec 1999 Columbus -- Marriage certificate privacy bill introduced. A bill to prevent the Social Security number and mothrs's maiden name contained on a marriage certificate from falling into the wrong hands was introduced this week by state Rep. Bryan Williams, R-Akron. The informanton would still be required for marriage certificates but would be removed for public records requests, said Omar Alvi, legislative aide to Williams. The bill would bring Ohio into compliance with a 1990 federal law banning social Security numbers from being given out as part of public records requests. Ohio lawmakers last year make the number optional on driver's licenses. End. The following is from http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/ the legislature of Ohio web page. As Introduced 123rd General Assembly Regular Session 1999-2000 H. B. No. 519 REPRESENTATIVES WILLIAMS-CATES-NETZLEY-HOOD-SCHULER-VANVYVEN- JOLIVETTE-GRENDELL-HOOPS-TAYLOR-COUGHLIN-ROMAN-ALLEN A BILL To amend section 3101.05 and to enact section 101.051 of the Revised Code to eliminate the requirement that social security numbers be included on marriage licenses and to require probate courts, except under certain circumstances, to delete social security numbers and maiden names of the mothers of the parties to a marriage from records pertaining to marriage licenses when those records are requested. End Just what does your mother's maiden name being blacked out, have with a Social Security number? OK a credit card company may use this for ID of an account but why black out this info for future genealogists? Let the credit card companies change their ID method, which should be changed anyway. 1. [OHSTARK] Laws of Genealogy
    2. Copied this, including the sender's name, from another list I'm on :) The Laws of Genealogy The document containing evidence of the missing link in your research invariably will be lost due to fire, flood or war. The keeper of the vital records you need will have just been insulted by another genealogist. Your great, great, grandfather's obituary states that he died, leaving no issue of record. The town clerk you wrote to in desperation, and finally convinced to give you the information you need, can't write legibly, and doesn't have a copying machine. The will you need is in the safe on board the "Titanic". The spelling of your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation. That ancient photograph of four relatives, one of whom is your progenitor carries the names of the other three. Copies of old newspapers have holes which occur only on last names. No one in your family ever did anything noteworthy, always rented property, was never sued and was never named in wills. You learned that Great Aunt Matilda's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer " somewhere in New York City". Yours is the only last name not found among the 3 billion in the world famous Mormon Archives in Salt Lake City. Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. The 37 volume, sixteen thousand page history of your country of origin isn't indexed. The critical link in your family tree is named "Smith". Regardless of the problems foreseen here, we wish everyone the best of the Holiday Season. 3. Dear List Members, Several of you have contacted me about our Index to Stark County, OH Naturalizations 1809-1852. If you would like to request research by mail, please contact us at our departmental e-mail address listed in the signature below, or by using the request forms on our website, also listed below. If you just click "reply" and send it to me personally, it may get lost in the shuffel. (I hate to admit it, but it is true.) Also, please be sure all email correspondence sent to the Genealogy Dept. at the library includes your snail-mail address. This allows us to send copies of the records you requested without having to contact you again. We are currently getting over 300 research requests per month. It really saves us time if we don't have to root through our files trying to find your address in previous correspondence or contact you for it. If those of you who have contacted me through the list will please re-submit your requests using our departmental e-mail or our website, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks for your understanding. Sincerely, Miss Lauren K. Landis, Genealogy Division Mgr. 2. Howard Slater
    3. I am searching for the eleven children of Daniel BAIR. Daniel was born in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland Co., PA, Nov. 8, 1794, and died about September 1835, in Paris Twp., Stark Co., OH. Daniel was the youngest son of Rudolph BAIR and Maria Barbara YERIAN BAIR. Daniel married Mary THOMA, April 1, 1816, in Stark Co., OH, and married Catherine FREYFOGLE, July 11, 1826, in Stark Co., OH. The eleven children are (possibly): Barbara BAIR, born Dec. 31, 1816, married Daniel BOSSERMAN; George BAIR, born 1817-1820; Elizabeth BAIR; Rebecca BAIR (Possibly born 1830 and known later as Rebecca NEWMAN or NUMAN); Rachel BAIR (John NEWMAN or NUMAN, Guardian); Amanda BAIR (John NEWMAN or NUMAN, Guardian); Abbalona (Abbie, Abigail, Appolonia) BAIR, born Sept. 29, 1829, married John Franklin BAIR, (John NEWMAN or NUMAN, Guardian); David BAIR (John NEWMAN or NUMAN, Guardian); William BAIR, born Jun 22, 1833, married Mary Ann UNKEFER, (Henry BAIR, Guardian); Eliza Ann BAIR (Zedekiah Welker, Guardian); Catherine BAIR (Zaddock Deppen, Guardian). Some documents show the names of the children as BAER, not BAIR. Daniel’s widow, Catherine, married John NEWMAN or NUMAN about 1838 and they lived in Osnaburg Twp., Stark Co., OH, until their deaths. Any confirming or correcting information would be greatly appreciated. Howard Slater hslater@pacbell.net

    3. Dear List, The book Index to Stark County, OH, Naturalizations 1809-1852, is quite accurate. The book Mr. Gardner was thinking of was a previous effort by our library that didn't turn out so well. It was the Index to Death and Marriage Notices 1815-1834. That work does have many errors, and it is best to contact us about any references listed in it. We do our best to find the correct information. Just thought I would clarify this. Thanks. > The book refered to in the message below is ONLY an index giving volume and > page #s to the Stark County Common Pleas Journals housed on microfilm at the > Genealogy Division of the Stark County District Library. 1. Re: [OHSTARK] Massillonian 1916
    2. Dan Terry
    3. Hi Cheryl, Would there by chance be any listings of the surname TERRY? My ggg-grandfather Carman L. Terry moved to Stark County, OH in the late 1840's with his brothers Thomas Terry and wife Adelia Shurts and John Terry and his wife Harriet Runyon from Westfield, Essex County, New Jersey. Carman married Sarah Elizabeth Shurts (yes, Adelia's sister) in Canton on 31 December 1849. John and Harriet Terry moved to Massillon by the 1860's. Thomas and Adelia Terry moved to Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana and Carman and Sarah Terry moved to Holmesville, Holmes County, Ohio. Approximately ten years ago I came across a book in the Dallas Public Library which was a history of some sort, either on Stark County or the City of Canton, which made mention of the "Terry Brothers Bakery" in Canton, Ohio. All three are listed in the Stark County, Ohio 1850 Census with an occupation of "BAKER". Would you be able to direct me to this book so that I may list it with the correct detail as a source record and help me rectify my neglect ten years ago? Thank you for your time and consideration in this request. Best wishes, Dan Terry - dsterry@home.com CherylQ@aol.com wrote: > Closet cleaning has yielded a book entitled the Massillonian 1916, it seems > as though this is the very first volume of the Massillon High School year > book.
