    1. [OHSTARK] Update on Hartzel Siblings in Stark Co., with new findings and questions
    2. Earlier this year, I posted information on siblings of my ggg-grandmother Sarah HARTZEL.  At that time, I had asked if anyone had any similar information on these siblings and perhaps knew who their parents were.  I have recently found some additional information (see following) linking these siblings to a Jacob and Elizabeth (?) HERZEL of Adams Co., PA.  However, I need some help in confirming what I found.  Also, this Jacob HERZEL may be the son of an Adam and Christina (?) HERZEL, or he may be a different Jacob entirely. Thanks, Michael Cummings 1. First, here is an update of the information I posted earlier this year: All of these families were enumerated in Pike Township, Stark County, Ohio in the 1850 census and lived quite close to one another. Sarah HARTZEL, b. 7 Apr 1817, PA, d. 10 Nov 1872; m. John RIDER 12 Feb 1837, Stark Co., OH  (Date of birth (calculated) and death are from Kosciusko Co., IN cemetery records). John HARTZEL, b. 17 Mar 1820, OH (PA?), d. 18 Dec 1883; m.Elizabeth SECRIST 31 Oct 1841, Tuscarawas Co., OH   (Date of birth (calculated) and death are from Noble Co., IN cemetery records). Elizabeth HARTZEL, b. 3 Jan 1822, Adams Co., PA, d. 7 May 1899, Pike Twp., Stark Co., OH; m. John GROVE (Locations and date of birth (calculated) and death are from Stark Co., OH death records). Hannah HARTZEL, b. 26 Jun 1824, Stark Co., OH, d. 5 Feb 1892, Pike Twp., Stark Co., OH; m. John EVERSOLE 27 Oct 1842, Stark Co.,OH  (Locations and date of birth (calculated) and death are from Stark Co., OH death and cemetery records). 2. Now, here is the information I recently found: >From IGI, I found: Sarah HERZEL, b. 7 Apr 1818, York Co., PA; Parents: Jacob and Elizabeth HERZEL, (Film Reference: 459075) Hannah HERZEL, b. abt 1820; Parents: Jacob and Elizabeth HERZEL (Film Reference:  459075) Marriage for Jacob HERZEL and Mrs. Elizabeth HERZEL, abt.1817 (Film Reference:  459075) Jacob HERZEL, b. 21 Mar 1790, York Co., PA; Parents: Adam and Christina HERZEL (Film Reference: 459075) (Note that all of these items had the same film number; unfortunately, this film is not allowed to be circulated.) Since my Sarah HARTZEL’s calculated birth date was the same day and month, and only one year off of the entry for Sarah HERZEL, I decided to see what else I could find. >From follow up research at the DAR library, I found: In: Baptismal Records of the Upper Bermudian “Ground Oak” Church, Huntingdon Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, 1791-1874     Sarah HERZEL b. 7Apr 1818, bap. 19 July 1818. Parents: Jacob HERZEL and Elizabeth;   Sponsors: Henrich Schlosser and Sarah In: The Parish Register of Benders Church, Butler Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania for the Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Congregations, 1786-1860     Elisabeth HERZEL, b. 3 Jan 1822, bap. 31 March 1822; Parents: Jacob HERZEL and Elisabeth;Sponsors: Adam Geiss and Susanna. End of research, and beginning of speculation: Since the birth date for this Elisabeth HERZEL exactly matches the calculated birth date for the Elizabeth HARTZEL listed above and since this latter Elizabeth was born in Adams Co., I believe that Jacob and Elizabeth HERZEL of Adams Co. are the parents of these HARTZEL siblings, and also that the birth date of my Sarah HARTZEL is 7 Apr 1818 and not the 7 Apr 1817 as calculated from her tombstone. If Hannah HARTZEL’s birth location is correct, this also means that Jacob and Elizabeth moved to Stark Co., OH between 1822 and 1824. Now the question is, which Jacob and Elizabeth HERZEL?  Is this Jacob the same as the one in the IGI records, born to Adam and Christina HERZEL on 21 Mar 1790, or is this another Jacob?  Who might Elizabeth be? Thanks again, Michael

    3. Hi All! My gr gr grandmother, Julia WALTERS, was born in Stark County, Ohio, in April 1836, and was united in marriage with Mathias Swartz on August 21, 1859 in Shawnee, Allen Co., Ohio so I am assuming the family moved to Allen Co. sometime before her marriage. Does anyone have any where Julia Walters could fit in? I need parents and siblings of Julia Walters. Any suggestions would not fall upon deaf ears! Thanks! Lyndy Michigan freeman@triton.net

    1. [OHSTARK] Stahl &/or Penrod
    2. One of my deadends is William W Stahl Aug 5, 1838 - Feb 23, 1904. He was supposed to have been born in Stark Couny. Both parents were from PA according to the census'. He married Jane Arnold Mar 31, 1864 in Holmes Co. She was the daughter of Daniel Arnold and Keziah Williams (KW is another deadend). William and Jane had 4 children, Harvey, Josiah, Anne and Mary. Anna Stahl McFarren had one daughter Ora Ethel. Josiah had children Ruth & Merle. Harvey and Pearl had a daughter Eliza Jane. Mary never married. I've suspected that Henry V Stahl was a brother since they have adjoining grave sites in the old West Lebanon cemetary. As far as I've found, Henry and Louisa only had a daughter Elizabeth. I've found Henry and William in the 1850 and 1860 census in and around Mt Eaton, Paint Twp, Wayne Co. I recently found an obituary for William W at the Massillon library. (I already had his death certificate.) Besides descendants, it lists brother Henry of West Lebanon and a sister Mrs Barbara Penrod of Dundee. Almost proving Henry is the brother :) But this is the first I've heard of a sister. The only family info was that William was Pennsylvania Dutch. Does anyone have any information on Barbara Penrod? Or any connection to any of these other Stahl's? I'd be grateful to any leads. ginseng@neo.rr.com ginseng@tccbbs.com Other Stahls I have connections to, tho not direct ancestors, are Stahl's from Winesburg, Wayne Co and Navarre, Stark Co.

    2. I, too, sent via the Stark Co. library for a copy of an obituary from 1951. I did have a date range of 3-4 days. Not only did they send the obit, they also sent a photocopy of an article written about the accident that killed the person. I was very impressed. (And it came in less than a week). Good Luck, Penny

    1. [OHSTARK] Austin and Pratt
    2. I just found out that I have another ancestor in Stark County. I finally found my gg-grandmother, Melissa Austin, listed in the 1850 Census with I am assuming her sisters Minerva and Adelia and her father, Joseph. Melissa, Minerva, and Adelia were all married in Henry County, but there is no trace of Joseph after 1850. Here is what I found in Stark Co records so far. There is a Joseph Austin married to Huldah Pratt. Later there was a Joseph Austin married to Sarah McCaughy. Could they be the same person? Also, in the household before Joseph Austin in the 1850 Census, there is an Isaac Austin. In his household there is also a Nancy and Darcus Austin and a Mary and Sarah McCaughy. Could Isaac be Joseph's brother? In the 1820 Census there is a James Austin. Could that be their father? Does anyone have Austins in their line? I would like to share information with anyone looking for the same people. THANKS!
