I am interested in corresponding with anyone working with the names CASSLER/COSSLER/COSLER. I know that early in the 1800s, various members of the CASSLER family of Lancaster Co. PA began moving into Stark County. There were 3 brothers located in the county in the 1820 to 1850 range..David Ludwig (Lewis) Cassler, b. April 25, 1785; Samuel Cassler, b. Sept. 5, 1789; and Johann Christian Cassler, b. Jan. 13, 1792. I have 1850 as the death date for Lewis Cassler. I have found that Christian Cassler moved to Kosciusko Co. IN shortly before 1850 and died there in 1858. I am still trying to find Samuel Cassler's death date. Are there accessible records on-line which would help me in my search for Samuel Cassler. It is possible that he was deceased by 1850 but I have been unable to find a record. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thank you. Marilyn Cossler Garrison

I have John and Hannah Reese in my file. I record one son only, Jacob, whom is not among your roster of 11 children.. My connection of son Jacob to parents John and Hanna is not proven. As to Jacob and his wife Sarah Thomas I have 158 descendants. I am an underachiver typist. James W Hartline, Sterling Heights Michigan 48310-5009 Ann Ulatt wrote: > Hi! Hello Everyone, I'm trying to find a birth and death date for a Jack Edward Dauer. First born sone of John Joseph Dauer and Ethel Mae (Garwood) Dauer. He is my father's older brother. My grandparents are no longer alive for me to ask and the 3 surviving children only know that Jack was born and died in Stark Co. in 1932. My dad says that he only lived about 6-8 weeks. He is buried with his parents in Hardin Co. on the Garwood/Dauer family lot. I went to the Health Dept in Canton when I was in OH last Sept. but without a firm birthdate, they couldn't help me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Julie Dauer Searching CLEMENTS, DAUER, DELONG, DOVE, GARWOOD, SPITLER

Hi Everyone, My message below didn't arrive in my inbox. Would someone please tell me if it made the list? Thank you so much. Cathy Hi Everyone, My ancestors were early pioneers of Wayne, Stark, Lorain and Medina Counties, so we are related to many folks from those and surrounding counties -- many of whose names I don't know, because maternal names are often lost in families. I am writing to ask if any of you know of a hereditary blood disorder in your family called Hereditary Sphereocytosis. My hematologist said that 50% of my relatives probably have this disorder because it is autosomal dominant. Sometimes this disease can be silent, as it had been in my family until my mother's cousin died of it (probably of a ruptured spleen) and her son and I were diagnosed with it and had spleenectomies. Sometimes Hereditary Sphererocytosis is so subtle, it can't be seen on a regular red-blood count smear. Apparently a regular RBC smear doesn't pick it up in our in our family, but a hematologist will know what to do to be sure. My hematologist said that he recently had a patient in his seventies who had no idea that he had this blood disorder until tests picked it up. Because even those who have the more serious form of the disease can have subtle symptoms, it can be dangerous if someone has it and doesn't know it. Hereditary Sphereocytosis is characterized by small, fragile, sphere-shaped red corpuscles and most people afflicted with it are of northwestern European descent. Sometimes anemia and jaundice are obvious with this disease, but sometimes, those symptoms are subtle, even in those who have the more serious form of the disease. This has been the case in our family. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who might have this disease in their families. One reason is that my hematologist has found some mysteries associated with my form of Hereditary Sphererocytosis that I would like to compare with others who may have some of the same difficulties. Another is this could be a great way to find cousins who have so far been lost because maternal names change and we lose track of family lines. This is a relatively rare disease, so it may be a good first step in finding cousins. My family was originally from Pennsylvania before they pioneered Ohio. She was born Janet ( Jessie ) Glendinning, May 11, 1870 in Dalry, Scotland, moved to Oregon, IL. in 1881. Lost her after that until I found obit for her sister. Can anyone tell me anything about her or point me in the right direction? Thank you for your time. Greatly appreciated, Glen
FYI -- Just happened to see your message. You do know that there are plenty of Gingrich family from Lancaster, right? It's just like Newt Gingrich ... same spelling and same family. Pennsylvania? I am a descendant of a Susanna "Susan" Gingerich/Gingery who was supposedly born in Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania in 1821. Her father was John Gingerich/Gingery, who came from Warwick Twp. Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania to Stark Co. before the 1830 census, in which he is enumerated with three other Gingerich families. > It seems very likely that one of the reasons my John came to Stark County was the Ohio and Erie Canal that was built through Stark County about the time he resided there. The last child of his that I have a record of as born in Pennsylvania was born in 1822 in Lancaster, so sometime after that they moved to Ohio. This would have been at about the same time as the Ohio and Erie Canal was being constructed. When we visited Stark County I even took a picture of the remnants of the canal system there and an old canal boat because I wondered even then if there could have been a connection. I always wondered why my John never owned property in Stark County. He may have just lived there while working on the canal. Does anyone else have relatives who worked on the canals in Stark County, or does anyone know of some good documentation on the history of this canal? > > Just a few days ago I found on the WEB an account of a Martin Greiner Jr. who married a Geib, and both this Martin and his father were supposed to have worked on the "Erie Canal." (The Erie canal ran mostly east and west through New York). The Geibs were descendants of a Maria Gingerich. These Geibs and Greiners all were reported as coming from Warwick Twp. I do not know exactly who Maria would have been a daughter of. The future father in law was said to have been Martin's "boss" on the Erie Canal. I wonder if the canal referred to was really the Ohio and Erie Canal, which ran north and south through Stark County. These Greiners and Geibs lived in Ashland Co. around 1832, which is right next to the township in Wayne County where my Joseph and Susan (Gingery) Frank later lived after their marriage. > > One of my favorite books as a youth was The Erie Canal published by the American Heritage Junior Library. On p. 112 this book states: > > "De Witt Clinton took time off from work on the Erie to break ground for a canal system in Ohio on July 4, 1825. The state had an extremely ambitious and complicated plan: It consisted of two main canals running generally north to south the length of the state, from Lake Erie to the Ohio River.. Work on the two canals continued for eight years. The Ohio canals were largely finished by 1832, although the Miami and Erie did not reach the lake until 1845. The Ohio and Erie Canal was 309 miles long and had 152 locks and 14 aqueducts." > > In 1841 Summit Co. was formed out of a considerable amount of Stark County, and was named after the "summit" or high point on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Just now I have the Akron Beacon Journal Index on interlibrary loan, and in reading through the index, which begins in 1841 there are several references to the canal that ran also through Summit County as well as some of Stark county that was not taken into the limits of Summit County. The film which it indexes I do not, however, have on loan at this time. In fact the early issues before 1870 can not be loaned from what I can find. A point of history since Steve was writing about Canal Fulton. In 1814 Matthew Rowland plated and started to sell lots in the village he called Milian on the west side of the river. Matthew died in 1822 and his heirs continued to sell lots. In 1826 on the east side of the river and canal another village was started called Fulton. Later Milian and Fulton were combined into Canal Fulton. One of the streets on the west side of the present town is called Milian. When asked about this name most do not know that it was once the name of the village on the west side of the river. Matthew Rowland was my 4th great-grandfather. Judith, This may be a long shot but probably worth a try. I am searching for information about Klocks, Kocks, Cox or possibly Kox. We have found these variations used. First name Mathias and married to Wihelmina Weller. They came to US from Germany in 1887 according to the 1900 census for Perry Township. (Cox) They lived at 941 Third St, Massillon as an owner. Any notice of a purchase or sale of the property would be interesting. Their children were: William Sep 1878 married to Hanna E Schaar Herman Mathias Feb 16, 1880 married to Edna Mae McKergin My grandparents. They moved to New Jersey but we don't know when. Helen G married to Griffith Anna Jul 1881 married to Davis Mary Nov 1889 married to Harry Starkey Minnie Apr 1896 married to Grisswell. Any information about any of the above will be greatly appreciated. If any descendants still alive are located that would be great. Thanks in advance for any help.
