    1. [OHSTARK] Thank You!
    2. Thanks so much to all of you who responded to my difficulty with the "Snow White" message. Yes I do have virus protection. I never open attachments from people I don't know and I especially haven't opened this one. I also don't open forwarded messages, even from people I know, if they are forwarding messages that make the rounds. Thank you again for your kindness. 3. Cathy: I keep getting it too. It is a virus. It attaches itself to outgoing mail, without the sender ever being aware they are passing it on. As long as you are not opening the attachment, you should be safe, I think. (I went to McAfee's web site & read about it.) You should update your virus software frequently, and make sure it is scheduled to run on your computer regularly, or do it manually. Here's a great website that you can check out internet hoaxes, virus', etc. Before I forward anything that is purported to be true, I check out its validity at this site. http://urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/blhoax.htm?once=t rue& Barbara Treaster Researching TREASTER and ANDREWS ----- Original Message ----- From: <martin.abba@juno.com> To: <OHSTARK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 27, 2001 7:09 AM Subject: [OHSTARK] Unwanted E-mail, Virus > Good Morning, > > Is anyone having trouble with receiving the "Snowwhite" e-mail message? > A couple weeks ago someone on one my PA rootsweb lists complained of it > and folks there said it was a virus. 2. Good Morning, Is anyone having trouble with receiving the "Snowwhite" e-mail message? A couple weeks ago someone on one my PA rootsweb lists complained of it and folks there said it was a virus. I have since unsubscribed from that list, but recently I've been receiving that "Snowwhite" message -- this morning there were two in my mailbox. With Juno, I have to click on the message in order to delete it and then when I click on "delete," it doesn't delete, it opens to the message that say's "do you want to open this attachment or save it to a file? " I then have to get out of there and when I click on "delete" again, it does delete. I then close down my computer completely to be sure the messages are deleted. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would be grateful for any that would prevent this message from arriving in my mailbox. Cathy Martin ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 3. I am searching for any information about the family of Urban Dyer, who lived in the area of Sparta (East Sparta), and died in 1845. He was probably born between 1790 - 1800, and married Dinah Robinett, widow of Joseph Robinett, on April 28, 1828, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Dinah already had 5 children at the time of this marriage: Moses Ayres Robinett, Harriett, Ann, Dinah, and James Robinett. Moses Ayres Robinett married Elizabeth Shoup in 1832, Tuscarawas Co., OH; Harriet married Mr. Reilly, Ann married Cyrus Blanchard; Dinah married Benjamin Painter. Thanks for any help, Joy

    1. [OHSTARK] Update on Old maps of Stark County
    2. Searcher
    3. Here are some quoted excerpts from the "Stark County Democrat" that I recently found in a perusal of that newspaper. I have been notified by a source that wishes to remain confidential that the old map was prepared by a person called "Vail" not Vall and supposedly does not contain property owners. If someone is ever able to see this ca. 1840 map please let me or this group know if it identifies parcels, cemeteries, churches, etc. The 1855 map is available for photocopying for a fee by the Stark County District Library --Richard Here are my excerpts: "1855: January 17 -Messrs. Williams, Dorr & Co, of New York are now engaged in preparing a new map of Stark County. It is to be of a large size, nearly double the dimensions of Vall's old map, which is now out of date, it will have maps of the important towns around the sides. Messrs. Williams, Dorr & Company have already published maps of several counties of this state. We hope our citizens throughout the county will give them such encouragement by subscribing, as will induce them to prepare a first rate map of the greatest wheat growing county in the state. February 14 -The new map of Stark County is progressing under the labors of Messrs. Williams & Dorr.. They intend ornamenting the margin of their map with plats of some of the principal towns. those towns which subscribe for the most maps will be the favorites. November 28 -Messrs. Williams Dorr & Company's, new map of this county is now ready for delivery. It is a large, fine map, and a copy should be in every house in the county. The map gives the names of all owners of large tracts of land in the county. engravings of .Stark County Infirmary. Maps of the towns of Massillon and Canton are also given. 1856: April 30 -A company of Gentleman in Canton, having purchased the copyright of Williams, Dorr & Company's "New Map of Stark County" are now ready to offer them to the public through their agent, Daniel Gotshall, Esq., who is authorized to sell them at $4 each, which is $1 cheaper than they have heretofore sold." [Please note that the latter price is not the current price charged to photocopy this 1855 map, which currently can only be done by the Stark County District Library after first contacting them. I would like to speak on behalf of all of us who obtained copies of this recently in thanking this library for the copies made. I obtained a copy of just two townships, so if you are only interested in a certain township(s) let them know which ones--Richard] Shop online without a credit card http://www.rocketcash.com RocketCash, a NetZero subsidiary

    1. [OHSTARK] A Stark County map that predates the 1855 map
    2. Searcher
    3. Are there any Stark County list group members that live in the Alliance area, that could check out the map that the Alliance (Rodman) Library has framed? I am interested in finding whether it lists property owners, as does the 1855 map. This map predated the 1855 one, and likely was drawn in 1840 or before. I found reference to it as the "Vall map" when it was replaced at the time the 1855 one was drawn up. My query to the Stark District Library produced the following response: "If the "Vall" map is the one advertised in the Ohio Repository ca 1840, then the answer is "No". To my knowledge this map does not contain property owners. The only library to our knowledge which has a copy of this (framed) is the Alliance (Rodman) Library. When we contacted them asking to obtain a copy, they were not willing to unframe and copy." Neal Thompson Gardner ------ If this map does list property owners or even churches it could be a valuable source for some of us who have relatives in Stark County on or before 1840. Is there anyone near Alliance that could check this out and report back to us some day about what it contains? 1. [OHSTARK] Stark Co. District Library Genealogy Guidelines
    2. skippyg
    3. Hi Everyone, This is Neal Gardner from the Genealogy Division of the Stark County District Library. Almost all of the 1855 Map copies are in the mail and on their way to each of you. I thought it would be helpful to quote the guidelines for requesting research from our department considering that some of you were not familiar with requesting research and copies. A personal note: Please do not request research to my personal e-mail, use our e-mail address at the library: scdlgen@oplin.lib.oh.us or visit the library website and use the Request Forms: www.stark.lib.oh.us Research by Mail from the Stark County District Library The Genealogy Division of the Stark County District Library in Canton, Ohio has an excellent collection which includes nearly all of the county's early courthouse records, as well as many other sources for the area. On request, either by mail or e-mail, the staff can search any of the indexed records for patrons living OUTSIDE Stark County. Patrons living within the county are asked to come in to the library for help with their research. We answer our mail and e-mail in order of receipt. Currently we are receiving nearly 500 requests for research per month, so it may be a few weeks before you receive a response. Please be patient. The library charges no fees for searches, but we do ask that you pay for any copies made, as well as postage. Currently copies are $.25 per page for letter-size and $.50 per page for 11" x 17" paper. Paper size is determined by the staff who will research your request and send you any pertinent copies along with an invoice stating all charges. PLEASE DO NOT PREPAY FOR RESEARCH. To facilitate our research, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines: 1. Be sure to include your regular postal address with ALL correspondence including e-mail. Copies of records can not be sent without it. 2. Make your requests as specific as possible, i.e. marriage, census, death, probate, etc. for a specific person. As much as we would like, we simply can't answer requests for any/all information for a person or surname. 3. Please limit your requests to 2 or 3 vital statistics , or one estate, per request. 4. Please give enough detail to help us find the records you want...full names of pertinent parties as well as the exact or approximate date the event occurred. However, do not include so much that we get bogged down in extraneous information. 5. Please include variant spellings of the name(s) about which you are inquiring. Also, if the name is pronounced other than the spelling would indicate, a phonetic spelling is helpful. Most requested Stark County Records: VITAL RECORDS: Birth & Death June 1867 to March 31, 1908 (both indexed). Marriage 1809 to 1972 (indexed), to 1994 (partially indexed). We can search for a specific deed if supplied with an approximate date, (within 5 to 10 years). We CAN'T search for any/all purchases and sales for a given person or surname.
