    3. Hello again, Jennifer. Actually, these materials are also available at the library, and they will make copies & mail to you. You will need to pay the cost of the copies. Their service is wonderful (yay Neal!). It has a very interesting section in the beginning of the book about early Ohio Photography and a section on biographies of selected Ohio Photographers. Unfortunately no biography for one of the Bakers. The book is actually a new book published in 1998. Good luck on your search! John Schlaff wrote: > Hello, John! 3. If you are having trouble getting a handle on when some old photographs were made and they are the ones that bare an ID of an Ohio professional photographer on the back, you might want to check out the book Ohio Photographers 1839-1900 by Dianne VanSkiver Gagel, or even buy a copy. It lists the dates and locations of professional photographers in Ohio and will give you a handle on the years that they would have been made. If you are like me, you have several with no names and nothing but the photographer and his place of business to identify them. Fun, isn't it? John

    3. Neal, Thank you so much for making the index available on-line. I just found around 40 new entries I can now check out for several of my families. Is there a similiar index available (in any form) for the Vaterlandsfreund? Thanks Laurie -----Original Message----- From: skippyg [mailto:skippyg@raex.com] Sent: Sunday, February 04, 2001 9:30 AM To: OHSTARK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHSTARK] Obituary index Hi Sue, The Genealogy Division at The Stark County District library has obit indices for the Canton Repository newspaper from 1956 to present day. I and volunteers are currently indexing the Ohio (later Canton) Repository for births, deaths, marriages and administration announcements. This index is currently in the next to last stage of the process. Totally alphabetical from 1815 to 1856, and another part (1857 to 1866) ready to be placed in the database is currently chronological. This index will be in book form through December 1870. For obits between 1870 and 1956, you will need a rather specific date to request a search - at least month and year of death. The years 1815 through 1840 are searchable on the library website. www stark lib oh us Place "dots" between the above. Neal Thompson Gardner Genealogy Division Stark County District Library

    1. [OHSTARK] Matthew Roland, Canal Fulton founder
    2. Searcher
    3. Bob Strock, wherever you are (my e-mail to your posted address on the Stark Co. web site was returned to me) I found the following in an old Stark County newspaper: "In 1811 Matthew Roland emigrated from Yellow Creek, Jefferson Co., and settled upon the land later owned by John Kirk. From the ferry, opposite Massillon, he came with his team up the bed of the river. The tracks of the wagon, in many places, could be distinctly traced several years after." I wondered if this would help you identify this Matthew you mentioned in the Lawrence Twp. list on the Stark web site. Could you please tell me whether you have further information on the history of the canal system through Stark County?
