Thomas CHAPMAN born in Stark County, OH, in 1814. His father, Thomas CHAPMAN, died later that year, leaving 5 children. These families had moved to Stark County in 1809 from Beaver County, PA. They had lived near Darlington, in the northern part of Beaver County. Other CHAPMAN families had also lived in that area prior to the 1790 Federal census. What is the origin of these CHAPMAN families before they settled in that section of PA? Thank you for any assistance. Mary Elizabeth Leppla, Wooster, OH

If you can find it, you might try "Beach City, Ohio and Vicinity - Its early history and highlights of its people, schools, churches, businesses, legends" by Lawrence N. Bose, published 1976 Gordon Printing, Strasburg, Ohio. As the title indicates, this booklet of about 70 pages covers Beach City, rather than Sugar Creek Township as a whole, but might have some useful information for you. A warning: it might be hard to locate - I don't think that even the Stark County District Library has it in their excellent collection. No, there was no time limit with regard to elapsed time between "first papers" and "final papers" until 1906. Declarations of Intention filed on or after 27 September, 1906, lapsed after seven years. Various courts handled the elapsed time issue differently for situations where "first papers" were filed before this date, but the Petition for Naturalization was filed after then. >Could you complete the process in another county or state?... Yes. You only had to prove you had filed a declaration of intention (if one was required for your situation) in a court of record *somewhere* in the U.S.A when you filed your petition for naturalization. Both parts of the process were generally done in a suitable court convenient to where one lived at the time. Rollie
