    1. Re: [OHSTARK] Marriage License Question
    2. Donna Cline
    3. Dear Kathy, Could Frank A. Rastetter possibly be the step father of Lena? Did they need a person over 21 to get the license? Maybe in the 1880 census you could find Lena Reichard and that would tell you. I have no other guess. Donna in North Lawrence.

I did not find anyone who appeared to be a court official. The watch factory was probably Deuber-Hamden or Hampden in Canton. I think it was on West Tuscarawas. A huge old castle-like building. All it's machinery was sold to Russia circa 1920's or 1930's and the bldg. remained empty for many years. Sorry I can't help you with Frank Rastetter. My only guess is that he may have agreed to be a witness at the wedding and accompanied them to City Hall for the license. Gary

    1. Marriage License Question
    2. Recently I acquired the marriage license for my great grandparents, James W. Gray and Lena Reichard, who were married on April 8, 1886, in Stark County. What I don't understand is the wording of the license: "Frank A. Rastetter applying for a license for James W. Gray and Lena Reichard to be married together, makes oath and says that James W. Gray is aged over twenty-one years, and said Lena Reichard is aged over eighteen years, and resides in said Stark County, that both of them are unmarried, and not akin to each other, or not nearer akin than second cousins, and that both are able and competent to enter into the marriage contract." It is then signed by Frank A. Rastetter. My question is, who is Frank A. Rastetter and why is he applying for the marriage license for this couple? I looked for him in the census and found a Frank Rastetter in Massilon in 1900, age 35, a bartender. In 1910 I found a Frank A. Rastetter in Canton, age 46, a Gold Jointer in a Watch Factory. I did not find anyone who appeared to be a court official. Can anyone explain this to me? Also, the minister who married them was J.W. Toland. Does anyone know his denomination? Thank you. Kathy

    3. Hi Shirley: There are some scattered marriages that have been indexed throughout the project but the bulk of the earlier marriages from "H" on are not on the index. We check the probate index online first. Then go directly to the microfilms or the early marriage records book for Stark County. We find most of the records that are not yet on the index on the microfilm. I checked with Debbie just to be sure and yep this is it. Hope this helps. 2. Sue - When the first page comes up, click on "Case Search" on left side. Then on next page enter surname in "Last Name" When page with surname entries comes up, click on a Case Number which is in blue on far right side. When that page comes up, be sure to click on "View Docket" at the lower left corner. Sometimes an item is fully transcribed - such as a Will. I've never had such luck but know of others who have found fully transcribed wills there so it's worth a try. Let us know if you still have problems. Sometimes the site gets really busy and gets a glitch so try again if you don't get anything. It's a wonderful site. Stark County District Library has marriages 1809-1986 with index to same 1809-1972 and might check for the marriage since you have a close approximate date.. You can email them at: http://www.starklibrary.org/genealogyservices.html Good luck..... Shirley

    2. This will take you to the correct website to search. I typically just put a surname in [no given] and do not choose any book(s). Just let it bring up all books Rootsweb has on this site for the particular surname. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/bookindexes/ Good luck, Shirley In a message dated 12/4/2005 11:56:35 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I am having a problem finding the Stark County Cemetery Inscription Index at Roots Web. 1. Re: [OHSTARK] Brown/Braun family early 1800`s
    2. The Alliance [Stark Co., Ohio] Genealogical Society published three Stark County Early Marriages covering 1809 to 1870. In publication covering 1809-1840, I find a David Brown and Polly Cook married on 27 May 1839; Volume B, page 94. There is also a Daniel Brown and Elizabeth Smith married 30 Apr 1840; Volume B, Page 116. No Braun listed. In publication covering 1841-1855, there is a David O. Brown and Mary Ann Tinkler married on 13 May 1855; Volume C, Page 124. No Braun listed. You can order copies of the actual marriage records which are on microfilm and at Stark County District Library. I doubt there will be any parental information shown because typically no such information recorded until 1900s in Ohio. The Library should be able to help you. http://www.starklibrary.org/genealogyservices.html You can request copies by snail mail or via their website - just go down to section showing Request Forms and click on that. Their charges for copies are only actual copy cost plus postage. They will mail an invoice to you along with requested copies. Good luck, Shirley In a message dated 12/3/2005 5:38:41 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hi, New to this list and in searching from the 1998-2001 messages I found a lot of mentions of the Daniel Brown./Braun family. Originally from Bedford county PA then to Stark county. in the early 1800`s. I believe my GGGGgrandfather David Brown is David Brown the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Houser. Does anyone have early marriage records for Stark county or KNOW who this David was married to? I know who my David was married to. Is there anyone out there who is still tracing this family? thanks, Cathy in Iowa
