    3. The legal age for females was 18. Males had to be 21. If the girl was not 18 then the father or guardian had to sign their permission on the marriage application/license. I have a copy of a license for a male in my family tree who was just 20 yrs old and his father was dead. He had his guardian sign permission to marry on his marriage license. There was no other form other than the statement on the license. 2. Thank you for the answers and tips. So you had to be a resident of Stark County to get married there? Or at least one of them did. That's interesting as the bride, as far as I know, lived her entire life up until 1880 and possibly later in Springfield Township, Mahoning County. I'm wondering if she went to live with the Frank Rastetter family as a domestic after her mother died. I do know the bride had a brother living in Stark so that's a possibility, too. Kathy

This brings up marriages, wills, administration filings, and even insanity filings. 1. RE: Reichard/Gray Marriage License and Rastetter
    2. sunny sandandsea
    3. Hello Kathy, I have a couple of marriage licenses from Stark Co, OH with similar wording. I found that a person who knew either or both the bride and groom had to assure the court that these people were of legal age to marry and that one was a resident of Stark Co, OH. Since you said James Gray was born in PA and that is where they lived after marriage, I suspect that Frank Rastetter was a friend, known by Lena Reichard, and agreed to vouch for them at court. Strangely enough, I have some Rastetters (also found as Rastettor) and Richard's (Sometimes spelled Reichard) in my family tree, although no Frank Rastetter. Pat >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [OHSTARK] Marriage License Question >Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 18:26:26 EST > >Recently I acquired the marriage license for my great grandparents, James >W. >Gray and Lena Reichard, who were married on April 8, 1886, in Stark County. >What I don't understand is the wording of the license: > >"Frank A. Rastetter is the legal guardian of the bride, you then have another avenue of research. At the death of the father, a legal guardian may have been appointed for the minor children. A record of this would be in the courts, either Orphans Court or at the Register of Wills depending on the procedures in that particular county. This record will contain considerable information about the family. Search those records according to the date of the father's death. 2. Donna, Lena Reichard was born in October 1865 so she was not quite 21 at her April 1886 wedding. Her father died before she was born and her mother died in 1884. In 1880 she was living with her mother and siblings with another family in Mahoning County. I have no knowledge of her mother marrying again but it's possible. I was just wondering if this was the normal practice when one acquired a marriage license. Perhaps the groom was out of town? He was a Pittsburgh native and the couple lived in Pittsburgh the rest of their lives. Kathy
