Can someone please tell me when Ohio began to record death 'certificates'? I'm looking for one in 1892. Thank you, Mercedes Farley
Hi Dennis, Here is information you requested. Volume 6, Page 342 - St. Mary's Catholic Church, Perry Twp., Massillon Ignatius Moser - 1821-1905 Catharine - 1823-1901 John H. Frey - 1857-1914 Caroline - 1858-1911 [They appear to be buried next to each other.] Page 351 - also St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery Jacob Frey - 1826-1908 Anna Mary - 1833-1913 In Stark Co., OH Deaths publication which covers 1867 - 20 Dec 1908: Ignatius Moser - Died 08 Jan 1905; Widower; Aged 83y4m8d; Died in Massillon; Born in Germany; Cause of death - Rheumatism; Residence - Massillon. Vol 4, Pg 171 Catharine Moser is not listed nor is Jacob Frey. For deaths after 1908 you can order copies of their death records from Stark County District Library via their website. http://www.starklibrary.org/genealogyservices.html Go down to Request Forms and click on that and follow directions. They have index which I believe begins with Jan 1909 or perhaps 21 Dec 1908 as well as film of death records. If you run into difficulty, email me privately at [email protected] and I'll try to help. Donna, I am clearing some e-mails from my program, and I surely hope I remembered to write and thank you for this. A friend of mine and I are planning a trip following the canal this summer. We have already seen parts of it, but want to do the whole thing kind of like a travelogue for our kids and grandkids. Thanks again. To the List: Would anyone know where church records from the Rowland Mennonite Church for the years 1880 to 1891 be kept. I contacted the First Mennonite Church and they said they had nothing that far back. Is there a Mennonite Historical Society in Canton? Thank you. Dianna
Hi - As I mentioned before I got this same page when I tried to access my freespace website. I found e-mail to write and ask what was going on. By the time they responded which was next day, my site was back up. They wrote that they were having trouble and was down for awhile. You might try e-mailing them to ask what happened. Good luck Marilyn
It is sad that these pages are being deleted - probably the information has been put on a CD Rom and is for sale somewhere on the web. Unfortunately, within the past year or so, Rootsweb was bought by Ancestry.com. Although, from what I've read and remember, there was an agreement between Rootsweb and Ancestry that Rootsweb sites, data, and information would remain free, I've noticed that there has been a gradual erosion of previously free data on most, if not all, the Rootsweb sites I visit. Much of the information I was able to access in the past, now takes one immediately to Ancestry.com with an invitation to join Ancestry to access the information or states that it is available on a CD. Almost all previously large, well run genealogical information sites, have come under the aegis of Ancestry. And, although they say they are not allied with any religious group, their address belies that. This is just another example of corporate greed, for which our culture is becoming well known. Very sad, indeed! Leigh Strange, CCHT., MRT. Ask me about hypnotherapy or Reiki for pain relief, healing energy, spiritual emergency, past life regression
Hi - Sometimes their sites go off for a time. I had that happen with my website which is on rootsweb freepages got the same message. It was back the next day. Good luck Marilyn

Is anyone familiar with a company or individual(s) that went by any of the following names during the time period of 1820-1845 and operated in Athens, Belmont, Meigs, Stark, and Tuscarawas Counties? They delivered goods from the East (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City) to towns in Eastern Ohio. I believe they lived in Tuscarawas and Meigs Counties for periods of time. William Wilson & Son William Wilson & Co. William Wilson & William Wilson Jr. I have found record of them in court records in the counties listed above (Common Pleas). Anyone have any other suggestions in where I can possibly find additional information on them? Thanks in advance, Rick Wilson St. Louis, MO
Thanks for the address and does anyone have the address for Holmes County Probate Records?
The address for the Stark Probate court is www.probate.co.stark.oh.us/search/search.html You sign in once so they can keep track of who is looking but there is no fee and it is a good site. Gives the case number and then you can go look it up really easy as they help you get started. Or it makes it easy for you to ask them for look ups. Or you can go to the Stark County Library Genealogy site and request a look up. The probate court is the first 5 copies free and then really cheap for more copies like 5 cents each if you go there. Don't know what they charge for them to do it and mail them. But I have heard it is reasonable. Donna North Lawrence
What is the email address for the Probate Records?
