Hello. I was hoping someone could help me look-up the obituary for Clare A. Hickmott Jr. I found through ancestry.com that he died in Canton, Ohio on March 5, 2002 and that he was married (I don't know to whom) and age of 69 years at death. I've tried looking it up through cantonrep.com - but can't seem to find it that way. I'm willing to pay for the copy/mailing costs. Thank you, Nancy Rivers Clio, MI

Is anyone familiar with the Taft House or Taft Hotel or does anyone have ideas on how I can find information on this hotel? It was located in Canton back in 1945 at 616 - 4th St., N.W. My brother says there may have been a house there which took in roomers/boarders but not a hotel. I recall nothing but private homes in that area. The building had 23 rental rooms not including 8 other rooms and storage rooms. It had a basement, first floor, second floor and mezanine. So it is possible that it was more boarding house style than hotel style. Thank you for asking. PatriciaM researching Weech and Stirrup in Bimini Spencer, Sands, and Knowles in Rock Sound

Try checking with the McKinley Museum in Canton... they have lots & lots of old pictures of old schools and other buildings in Stark County. They very well may have one of that hotel. Could you look up a death record for Eliza Kimmell died Sept 11, 1900. She was the wife of Jacob Kimmell who died Sept 19, 1901. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])
I have a new email address: It is [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Please route the Stark Co. messages through that email now and not the one that it is coming from now. Thank you, Delpha Schuster
Hi everybody. I have a request to make. Lewis Willard was in the War of 1812, Ohio Militia for 3 months. I have two cards showing his regiment and a page out of a book showing the same regiment. The two cards is all the National Archives sent me and I feel there must be a few more forms to look at. What I really need is something showing his age. Does anyone on the list live in the Wash., D. C. area that would be willing to go to the National Archives? I am wondering if there is an enrollment, any kind of muster records that would show his age and place of birth would be a good thing also!! Be happy to pay any costs involved. The age is the one vital thing I need to know if Lewis is the father or brother of my Henry Willard who was one of the first settlers in Tusc. Co. I appreciate any offer or suggestions. The Willard family came to Tusc. Co. 1802 from Somerset Co., Pa., and around 1816 moved to Stark Co. Thank you, Carole Lubbers Marietta, Ga.
Thank you everyone for your input! I know have a much better idea where to look for the record I'm seeking. Carole, BRAVO, BRAVE, BRAVO.........Way to get things rolling. Hope it pays off. The age is everything. If we know the age our search changes completely. Today I sent an email to the Meyersdale Public Library in Meyersville, Somerset, PA. I am trying to nail down Henry Willard. I asked for any church records, property records and tax reports. Keep your fingers crossed. Ray On Mar 28, 2006, at 4:31 PM, carole lubbers wrote: > Hi everybody. I have a request to make. Lewis Willard was in the > War of 1812, Ohio Militia for 3 months. one line across two large pages of a journal started in most counties in 1867 w/ a few in the 1850's surviving. The information was taken from "certificate type forms" and put in the journals. Some "certificates" were saved i.e. Carroll Co., some were cut up into little pieces and used for markers in Estate files i.e. Franklin Co....not sure about the others. The State Vital Statistics dept was formed Dec. 20, 1908 to collect the information and that is when the "certificates" became the actual records...except the part they cut off that they don't want you to see. Ohio began registering deaths [and births] in 1867. They were recorded in Registers until after December 1908 and kept only by the County. Very seldom were parents of deceased recorded on these registers. After December 1908 the counties were required to send a copy to Vital Statistics in Columbus, OH. A few counties have birth and deaths from as early as 1840 - but those are rare. If you are looking for a death in Stark Co., OH, let me know. As corresponding secretary to Stark Co., Chapter OGS, I currently have a copy of Stark Co., OH Deaths publication covering 1867-1908 published and for sale by our Society. Please keep in mind not all deaths were recorded during the 1867-1908 timeframe. I, for one, have a g-g-grandfather who died in Massillon, Stark Co., OH in 1888 and his death was never recorded. The only way I found his death was via a newspaper article and then I confirmed his burial. And, unfortunately, my paternal grandmother's birth was never recorded but her siblings were. Ah, the "challenges" of genealogy. <smile> Shirley Houk In a message dated 3/27/2006 3:33:07 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Can someone please tell me when Ohio began to record death 'certificates'?
