Hello All, My name is Doyle Stroup. I have been doing my Family History research for more then 25 years. There has always been a mystery about one of my mother's grandmothers. The lady's name was Anna Columbia Evans that married William R. Sliger approximately 1876. Her birthday was 12 October 1855. From the name Evans you can probably deduct that she was of Welsh descent and you would be correct. She lived most of her adult life in Olean, New York. She died there on 13 January 1927. The obituary for her lists several relatives as visiting the funeral. Among these were 2 from Canton, Ohio. They were: 1) Harry Evans 2) Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Evans I looked in the 1930 US Federal Census for both, but could find nothing. I did find Harry Evans in the 1910 and 1930 census. He was married to a Lida (sp?) and the indication was that they never had any children, It does however indicate that he was welsh and that he emigrated to the US in 1860. I know nothing else about Anna Columbia's family. Legend (from my grandmother who was Anna's daughter) is that she was born in Baltimore and that she was named Anna Columbia because she was born on Columbus day. Her census records are ambiguous as to where she was born because in 1880 the census says she was born in Penna. The 1910 census states she was born in MD. The census never in 1900, 1910, 1920 ever indicates she was born in Wales. I have never been able to find a census with her as a child. I believe Harry Evans was her brother and that C. R. Evans may also be a brother. I need some help on getting a better ID for C. R. Evans and getting death info if it is available. Is anybody on this list that can help me? I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Doyle Stroup e-mail: [email protected]
I'm searching for a Jacob Berger who lived in the Stark Co. area. However, it would be impossible for him to have fathered Christian because his wife was born in the U.S., unless he had a previous wife. Your Catherine/ Katie Berger does appear in the 1880 census in Kalamazoo, MI. Christian and his wife were both born in Germany: _Christian BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_0&frompage=5) Self M Male W 57 GER Farmer GER GER _Cathrine BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_1&frompage=5) Wife M Female W 53 GER Housekeeper GER GER _Isaac BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_2&frompage=5) Son S Male W 25 OH Farming GER GER _Christian BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_3&frompage=5) Son S Male W 23 OH Farming GER GER _Martin BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_4&frompage=5) Son S Male W 21 OH Farming GER GER _Andrew BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_5&frompage=5) Son S Male W 18 OH Farming GER GER _Anna BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_6&frompage=5) Dau S Female W 13 OH At Home GER GER _Cathrine BERGER_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_7469292_7&frompage=5) Dau S Female W 9 MI GER GER

Oh, dear, you are all correct; I didn't give much information, forgive me. Herewith: My great grandmother, Katherine (Katie) Berger b. 14 May, 1872 in Kalamazoo, MI. I believe her father was Christian Berger b. 2 Jun 1823 in Wurttemburg, Germany. What lead me to Ohio, is that the family story is that Katie came to visit relatives in Ohio and there met her husband, Arthur Daniel Snyder b 5 Sept 1872 in Norton Twp., Summit Co. I knew her, but was far too young to ask her questions by the time she died in 1970. Any help gratefully appreciated, I am aware of the many other Berger families in the US at that time, so I won't be crushed if there is no connection. Thanks.
Dianna - I purchased a book on eBay a few months ago. It is "History of the First Reformed Church of Canton, Ohio." Published about 1920. There is a presentation handwritten in the front - "Hearty Good Wishes from Your Church - Easter 1921." In this book there is reference to Trinity Reformed Church at Market Ave. N. and 6th Street and a photograph of that church - which looks very familiar to me, a native and 35 year resident of Canton. There is reference in the book of a break of the Reformed Church from the Lutheran Church. Also, reference to Trinity Reformed as one of the growing number of Reformed churches in Canton. My guess would be that in 1933, this church was still part of the Reformed Church denomination. One reason I say that is because my memory seems to tell me that Trinity Reformed was still the name of that church on N. Market in the years I was growing up in Canton - 40's and 50's and walked past it many times. In looking into this just a little, as a result of your question, I did find a reference to the Reformed Church/United Church of Christ. However, as I mention above, I feel pretty comfortable in saying that Trinity Reformed was still a member of the Reformed denomination in 1933. Of course, there are many churches which are Reformed in their theology. Presbyterians, for example. However, there was(is?) this denomination which uses the term Reformed in the name of their denomination. Most of the references I have seen in my short research are to The Reformed Church in America. However, there were a couple references to The Reformed Church in the United States (of America). I do not know if these are two names for the same denomination. If there is anything you might like me to look up for you in this book, let me know and I will see if there is any reference to it. To the List: In the Biographical Sketches of Stark County Ohio it says that my gg grandparents John H. Brenner and FAnny Brenner were members of the German Baptist Church. Does anyone know what the name of the German Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio in 1860-1890? Thank you. Dianna

"Can anyone point me to a family tree for John and Wilson Berger? My great-grandmother was a Berger and she is one of my brick walls." You haven't given us much to go on, but....I presume you found John and Wilson Berger in the 1880 Census in Canton, where they appear next door to each other.....by the kind of census searching which I enjoy (this is my equivalent of a crossword puzzle) I have created a four-generation tree for this Berger family, which starts in Bethel, Berks County, PA; though I suspect you could find out a lot more with more work. So what was your ggrandmother's name? Goldie, Hellen/Ella, Sadie/Sarah? Those are the candidates I have found.... I will send you the GEDCOM or FTW file I've made if you like. Otherwise, I really have been wasting my time! Susan Osburn (thinking of becoming professional genealogist)
Can anyone point me to a family tree for John and Wilson Berger? My great-grandmother was a Berger and she is one of my brick walls.
I think you are quite correct, Mike. I remember the Berger Division of Republic quite well from back in the 40's and 50's and maybe later. The term "Berger Shops", which referred to this division of Republic, is familiar as well. That brings back something I had forgotten about - thanks for the memory, Nancy and Mike !
