    3. There is no sexton or other official. The tiny cemetery is in the middle of someone's cornfield, is sorely neglected and in horrible condition. One man and his son cleaned it up and re-erected stones two times about a decade apart. The Turtle Creek Township officials promised to maintain thereafter, but lied through their teeth. No one has taken care of this historic cemetery. Shelby Co Genealogy Society and Shelby Co. Historical Society have done nothing either. I believe that descendants must move the headstones to another cemetery soonest or they will be lost forever. -----Original Message----- From: Terry Chevako Bava [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 27, 2002 5:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHSHELBY] Carey Cemetery address Does anyone have the address for the Sexton of Carey Cemetery in Turtle Creek Twp.? 3. Some of our people are buried in the Carey cemetery. When we first visited the cemetery, after learning of the location and the effort to clean it up, we found it in deplorable condition. We nearly gave up on locating our ancestor's gravesites, but my wife found them. After putting flowers on the graves, we removed as many of the weeds and brush that we could with the limited tools that we had. We promised that next year we would come with weed whackers, tools, even the mower. Much to our surprise and pleasure, when we visited last year (2001), we found the place cleaned up and someone even constructed a small parking area. We put a note on the Shelby web site thanking who ever did all the work. Again we thank whomever for the time and effort that went into the cleanup; believe me it was no small task. PS: Our ancestor's are Bazzel Burton and wife, Elinor Cole. There son, Shadrack Cole Burton, is buried at Cole's Chapel Cemetery, Turtle Creek Twp., Shelby County, Ohio.
