Hello List, I have over the length of a year, been researching the murder of my gr gr grandfather, Phillip Rhodes who lived in Van Buren Twp. at the time of his death in April of 1863. I have been very fortunate in that I found the newspaper accounts and recently have gleaned the coroner's inquest which includes an eyewitness account of the incident. I am now trying to pin down the exact place in which the event happened. The coroners report states that he was living at the David Bates farm. and that there was a neighbor Peter Schmith (Smith) and Simon Schmith that stated that they lived about a quarter of a mile from Rhodes. Was hoping that someone might have some info on these surnames or perhaps where they were located. Also the eyewitness was a Catherine Niesle(?) who was 19 at the time and her parents lived near Port Jefferson. ( because of the handwritten script, Catherine's last name is hard to decipher) If anyone out there has any knowledge of this event or people it! would be very much appreciated!!
