Hi Jayne, My Cromer's My grandmother was Goldie M. Cromer born in Fort Wayne Indiana 1904 Her parents were Jesse Albert Cromer born in Newport Ohio 1879 His parents were Walter C. Cromer and Lydia (Elizabeth)? Covault. I believe his father is Thomas Cromer but I have not been able to get a birth record for Jesse or Walter. There wasn't very many Walters and I found a Walter Cromer that died in Cleveland in 1884 which would probably mean if it is my Walter (death record from Cleveland list parents unknown) Lydia or Elizabeth would have remarried more than likely. My Grandmother married in Cleveland and two of her children my father being one of them was born in Cleveland. So the connection to Cleveland is strong. Also Jesse Albert married Clara Fowler of Van Wert, Ohio and when she died in 1913 leaving 4 young children the family got split up and raised by relatives. Her obituary says that Jesse Albert - used Al as his name - was raised in Lima. His 2nd marriage took place in Lima. Jesse Albert and Clara Fowler had 4 children in Fort Wayne - James 1903, Goldie and Ralph (twins)1904,and Marguarite Helene 1906. They were in Fort Wayne till 1908 (He is listed as a teamster) In 1910 they were in Cleveland according to the will of Clara's grandparents, Clara died in Ehren, Florida 1913, Jesse remarried in Lima 1916 about. Jesse died in Benton Harbor Michigan in 1945. Now back to Shelby Co. I have found records listing Lydia Covault marrying Walter Steinberger 1st, then Thomas Cromer 2nd off hand I think it was 1875 which would fit and census shows a Walter in the Thomas Cromer household in 1880 or was it 1870 can't remember off hand. There is also a Walter Cromer listed as a buglar in the Civil War age 19. It sounds like it belongs but I haven't located Jesse's birth record in Shelby. There is no listing. Walter obviously didn't stay there so maybe it was registered elsewhere as I have come across in other records of listings of children born in other counties born elsewhere. Anyway that's about where I am I believe this is the family but I have not been able to find records to prove this yet. The family ended up in Cleveland, Toledo, and Benton Harbor, Michigan and Goldies twin brother Ralph moved to California. Oh one more thing Goldie is suppose to be part native american. This is unconfirmed as well. Lillian [email protected]
