    1. [OHSHELBY] Re: Julian
    2. In Book 1 of the Shelby County Birth Records, there is a record of a female Julian, first name not listed, born December 1873 in Jackson Twp, the illegitimate daughter of Rebecca Julian. On July 3, 1873, Rebecca Julin married John J. McClare, H. Hume, N.P., performed the ceremony in Clinton Twp. In the 1880 Jackson Twp., Shelby County, census there is an Aurora Julian, age 6, listed as bound, living with the Levi Retter family. She is listed as being born in Ohio, her mother was born in Ohio, no information given for her father. Does anyone have any other information about Rebecca Julian, Aurora Julian or John McClare? I can find no further record of any of them other than what is listed above. I was interested to see that some of the Julian family moved to Bureau County, IL. Some of my Clayton extended family went there from Shelby County as well. I am interested in Aurora because of her connection with the household of Levi Retter. In 1900 Levi has Stella Retter, listed as daughter, living in his household along with her two children, Raymond and Myrtle Van Fossen. Stella was the first wife of my great-grandfather, Alva Van Fossen. I have never found a birth record or death record for Stella. She was born in 1875 but is not in the 1880 census with her parents, Levi and Matilda (Hawver) Retter, nor is she listed in that census in the households of her siblings, A.S. Retter or Dora (Retter) Rike. I am wondering if the Retters adopted Aurora so that Aurora and Stella are the same person. Any information about these people would be greatly appreciated. Beth

    3. Not my line. but I do have part of the Quadrennial Census for Shelby Co.(the alphabet that covers J surnames). This is a census every four years for males 21 and up and listed for mandatory road work and possible militia duties. Some men were missed. 1827- No Twp. listed, includes a few names from Allen co. for some reason: Stephen Julien. 1831 - William and William Jr. No Twp designated. 1835 - Salem Twp. Isaac 1839 - Salem Twp. Alex & John 1843 - None listed for Shelby Co. 1847 - None listed for Shelby

There are TWO wives for Isaac Julian. The first wife is on the 1850 Census in Berlin, Bureau, Illinois. Her name is "Elizabeth", and she is listed as 33 years of age - same as Isaac. She is from North Carolina. 20 years later on the 1870 census of the same town - there is no listing for Elizabeth. Isaac Julians wife is now Charlotte, age 46 (Isaac is 52). Charlotte is from Pennsylvania, and has given Isaac a daughter- 2 year old Alice. The remaining children are in their 20's, probably visiting. These appear to be the same families because they have the same children - just 20 years later. Isaac's son Wesley Julian has moved next door and runs the farm next to his father.

(There's 3 different Julian's in the town with kids, including Zacariah, Eli and Jesse.) I have census listings for Issac Julian's family in the Town of Berlin, in Bureau County, State of Illinois in both 1850 and 1870. Judging by the time frame you gave, I think you're looking for Isaac Julian - the uncle of my Isaac Julian. I don't have a lot of information on him but there are about 5 Isaacs descended from the "Rene St. Julien" line around that area. Some of the neighbors are hard to read, but they include: Lydia Sweet, Johnathan Smith, Robery Park, Henry Belknah?, John Stronghart, and Richard Avy. (1850) - also Clark Silah, Jay Andrew, Julia McGraw and Isaac's son, Welsey Julian. Also listed on the census was visitor Ralph Vickery - age 13, younger brother to Nancy Vickery-Julian (Wesley's wife)

    3. There is no sexton or other official. The tiny cemetery is in the middle of someone's cornfield, is sorely neglected and in horrible condition. One man and his son cleaned it up and re-erected stones two times about a decade apart. The Turtle Creek Township officials promised to maintain thereafter, but lied through their teeth. No one has taken care of this historic cemetery. Shelby Co Genealogy Society and Shelby Co. Historical Society have done nothing either. I believe that descendants must move the headstones to another cemetery soonest or they will be lost forever. -----Original Message----- From: Terry Chevako Bava [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 27, 2002 5:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHSHELBY] Carey Cemetery address Does anyone have the address for the Sexton of Carey Cemetery in Turtle Creek Twp.? 3. I did not find a Frank Schaffer listed in my Memorial Records for that time period. There was one listed as Franklin Kenneth Schaffer b 5-11-1924 d 12-27-1951. I also went to the Health Dept on the off chance that he died in Shelby County but was buried elsewhere. They have no Frank Schaffer in that time period dying in an accident. However the Frank Schaffer(s) which we did find died of natural causes in the 1930's. The lady looked under the names Schaffer, Schafer, Shafer, and Shaffer. There is the possibility that if the accident occurred in Anna that the victim, if still alive, may have been transported either to Dayton (Montgomery Co.) or Lima (Allen Co.) where there was more advanced hospital services. I cannot look up anything in the newspaper microfilm unless I have a more concrete date. Sorry. carol >From: [email protected] >Message Board Post: > >I am looking for info on Frank Schaffer who is said to have died in some >sort of train accident in or @ 1947. 1. Re: [OHSHELBY] COON cemetery lookup
    2. Terry, I find only one David Coon listed in the "Memorial Records of Shelby County, 1819-1975", compiled by Barbara Adams and Gene Mozley, to wit: In Carey Cemetery, Section 29 of Turtle Creek Township: David Coon, d July 29, 1949, 67 y. Nearby is: Lucy Coon, wife of David, d Oct 10, 1859, 75 y. Infant Coon, dau of J. N. & E. (no dates) and possibly: _____or (or 'on?), Eleanor, b Feb 18, 1827, d Sept 10, 1838 This David Coons appears outside your stated timeframe, however, I hope this helps you.
