My aunt recently gave me this book and it is wonderful! It's first edition was published in 1883 and I found many relatives listed. If you can find it, it is a good buy. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 28, 2002 9:43 PM Subject: [OHSHELBY] History of Shelby Co at libraries too > In a message dated 3/28/2002 3:05:32 AM Eastern Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > > I have noticed in a few postings references to the History of Shelby Co., > > Ohio--is this a book? It is purchasable? How much? From the society? Thanks. Kathleen
"Memorial Records of Shelby County, 1819 - 1975" is sold by the Ft. Loramie Historical Association. I'm not sure what the current price is though. Ft. Loramie Historical Association Attn: D. Thank you very much. Since I paid for one from H igginsonbooks without a complete index, guess I'll not pay for a second one just for the index. Maybe I'll get really ambitious and look through the Hitchcock edition and do my own index..... Kathleen
Thank you. Kathleen
Definitely a wonderful book. The FHC near me has it on microfilm and it gave me wonderful information especially when I thought someone lived in a certain town and they didn't. I copied the information on my surnames and find myself referring to those notes often and finding new connections. I have found names listed there that I haven't found anywhere else because they didn't die in Shelby County but were buried there with family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John & Deedee Murphy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 29, 2002 4:17 PM Subject: [OHSHELBY] Memoria lRecords > Memorial Records of Shelby Co., Ohio 1819-1975 compiled by Barbara Adams & Gene Mozley is a cemetery log of various headstones in various cemeteries in Shelby Co., if they were legible. These records give the date died, age and sometimes the lot number, a veteran, and residence in some cases. It could possibly. The smaller book is from the death indexes for whatever years are listed. The memorial book is listing by cemetery of the persons buried there (that is my understanding at least). Unless your Memorial Book has a section that lists deaths by year, but my memory of the microfilm I saw is that it by cemetery only. The book, "Memorial Records of Shelby Co. Ohio 1819-1975" gives cemetery information, by cemetery. It includes an alphabetical index of the names of the people buried. You have to look up each person to find out their birth and death dates. Kathy
John: I happen to be one of those fortunate people who has an old Shelby Co. Ohio history book and have longed for an index. You said in an e-mail on line that you could help those who have no index. The names that I am interested in are Coon and Burton. My Great grandfather was David Coon and he married Lucy Burton. Some of her brothers came to Shelby Co. also. Joshua Burton being one of them. Is it possible to copy a page from the index with these names on it? I will be happy to pay for copies. My e-mail address is [email protected] and home address is 8274-82nd Ave NE Silverton, OR 97381 Thanks so much. Joy Shreyer
There are two boooks that are the "History of Shelby Co., OH". 1. "History of Shelby County, Ohio", R. Sutton & Co., Philadelphia, PA 1883. This was reprinted in 1968 by Hammer Graphics, Inc. Piqua, OH. This book does have an index, but I have found names that are not listed. I know of no other reprints. 2. "History of Shelby County, Ohio and Representative Citizens", by A.B.C. Hitchcock, Sidney OH, 1913, published by Richmond-Arnold Publishing Co., Chicago, IL. A reprint of this is available throught Higginson Books. This has no index, and it is a bear to find anything, as the Table of Contents lists only the major biographies. All of the other persons that relate to these major people are only to be found by reading the entire volume! Hope this helps.................. Bruce G. An index is available with the second edition published in 1968 by the The Shelby County Historical Soc. and printed by Hammer Graphics, Inc. of Piqua, Ohio. The late Eleanor Dorsey is one of the ladies that helped index the book.It has about 23 pages of index. If you need help with a book without an index, contact me.
