In looking through the St. Boniface Catholic church records from the 1830s to the 1870s (all German families), I noticed that the godparents or baptismal sponsors were usually not related. This differs from today's custom, where parents usually ask a husband and wife to represent their child. Does anyone know what rationale 19th century German Catholics used to choose their baptismal sponsors? Bob Wallace Columbus, Ohio
