Dear list members, Yesterday I received an e-mail from Ancestry.com that was quite disturbing to me and which I think you should be aware of, in case you are thinking of taking out a membership. It contained the following two paragraphs: (1.)On 7/26/00 we will automatically renew your Annual membership for another year unless you tell us otherwise. You will be charged the low membership rate of $59.95. (2.)Information related to your account is found at http://www.ancestry.com/help/member/myaccount.htm. Please take a moment to ensure that your personal contact information and credit card number are valid. It is important that we have a current credit card on file so you don't experience an interruption in your service. If this information is up-to-date and you wish to continue your membership, no action is required on your part. When I called them today to cancel my membership, I told the lady that I thought that automatic renewal was a bad policy. She informed me that I had agreed to this when I joined. READ ALL SUCH AGREEMENTS CAREFULLY! Due to concerns over the possibility of hackers obtaining it, I have never given out my credit card number on-line, so I also told her I thought it was wrong of them to post it and other personal information on-line, even though it was protected by a user name and password. She replied that they had not posted the information, and that I had posted it myself, when I joined. This is not true, since I joined by phone, not by e-mail. Please forgive me, if you think this is not a proper posting to the list, but I just thought list members should be aware of the practices of this company. Jim Davis
