Hello Sue, On the 1850 census, there is a John Heater family living in Scipio Township which could be the right family. His wife's name is Elizabeth, and the children, ranging in age from 17 years to 2 months are Isaac, Sarah, John, David, Jacob, William, Perry, Lovina and Elizabeth. Sarah was 15 in 1850. Perhaps she or her mother made the coverlet. It's possible that one of them may have gone by a middle name which began with J. One of my husband's ancestors is listed as a weaver in census records, so I once mentioned to a dealer in antique textiles that it would be nice if we could find a piece with his name woven into it. She told me that the name woven into a coverlet was most likely the name of the person for whom the coverlet was made NOT the name of the person who did the weaving. I never delved into this further to find out if what this dealer told me is a fact, but it's something to think about.
