    3. Hello All! Thomas J. Thiel wrote me this letter: ********************* I recently purchased copies of Nicholas Gonner's "Luxembourgers in the New World (1987)," which provides a lot of insight of interest to genealogists whose ancestors emigrated from that part of Europe. In 1889, Gonner originally published "Die Luxemburger in der Neuen Welt" in Dubuque, Iowa. This was a compilation of years of information Gonner had collected describing the emigration from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the United States. It was in German. Then in 1987, Jean Ensch, Jean-Claude Muller, and Robert E. Owen, Edited an English translation entitled "Luxembourgers in the New World." Volume One of this new edition is divided into three parts. Part I covers in fairly explicit detail the reasons for the Luxembourger migration between 1840 and 1890 and also discusses how they traveled. Part II talks about Luxembourgers settlements in the US. Especially interesting is the chapter devoted to Ohio settlements including the communities of Kirby, Carey (especially "Our Lady Consoler of the Afflicted"), and Upper Sandusky. In Seneca County the communities of New Reigel, Frenchtown, Alvada, Bascomb and Tiffin are discussed. Part III discusses various aspects of Luxembourger presence in the US. Volume Two is a very large index of Gonner's newspaper Luxemburger Gazette (1871-1918). These are extremely well-indexed documents that provide excellent research capability for looking up individuals and communities. Since Gonner settled in Missouri and then Iowa that part is covered in somewhat more detail but the entire book is most fascinating. For example I found my G Grandfather's name (and many other Kirbyians) signed a petition in 1892 urging the Grand Duchy to provide a Consul to the US. II would be happy provide Look-Ups in this document. ******************************************* I have updated the look-up volunteer page to include Thomas.
